TEMPE, Ariz. - Sophomore Amy Baker crushed five home runs on Friday as the Creighton softball team split a pair of games at the Diamond Devil Invitational hosted by Arizona State. The Bluejay catcher hit two home runs as Creighton snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 7-2 win over Weber State Friday afternoon, and then tied a school-record with three home runs in a 7-6 loss to Campbell in the night cap. Baker, who had three multiple home run games as a freshman, went 5-for-7 with eight RBI in Creighton's two games on Friday at Farrington Stadium.
In the opener, the Bluejays (8-12) went ahead in the third inning, when Liz McKewon scored on an RBI double off the bat of Brittnie Kreiser.
Creighton scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning, when the first two Bluejay batters reached base with the help of Wildcat errors. Baker then made WSU pay when she ripped her first home run of the day, a three-run blast to left center field. Kreiser followed with her second home run of the year and the Bluejays were up 5-0. With two out, Ellen Homan reached on a bunt single and then scored on an RBI triple from Danai Martin.
The Wildcats (3-7) broke up Becca Changstrom's shutout bid in the bottom of the fifth inning with a two-run home run.
Baker added a solo home run in the sixth inning to put the Bluejays ahead 7-2.
Changstrom hurled a complete game to improve to 5-5. The rookie right-hander allowed just four hits, walked three and struck out nine.
Both Baker and Kreiser collected two hits in the first game, while McKewon scored two runs against Weber State.
In the second game of the day, Creighton lost despite out-hitting Campbell 13-4, as four unearned runs in the first inning led to the one-run loss.
In the second game, the Bluejays appeared to set the side down in order in the first inning, but a two-out error by Malloree Grove opened the gates for the Camels. Bluejay starter Sammy Snygg then hit the Campbell clean-up hitter with a pitch before surrendering a three-run home run to Taylor McGee and a solo shot to Raven Lee to give the Camels four unearned runs and a 4-0 lead after a half inning.
Creighton cut the Campbell lead in half in the bottom of the first, as Baker hit a solo home run with one out to get the Bluejay scoring starter. Kreiser walked and MaKenzie Michael followed with a single, and both players advanced into scoring position on the throw in from the outfield. Kreiser scored on a hit by Martin, but Michael was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
The Camels added three more runs in the third inning to push ahead 7-2.
Baker's heroics continued in the bottom of the third, as she followed a McKewon lead-off single with a two-run homer to center field, cutting the Campbell lead to 7-4.
The score remained the same until the seventh inning, despite the Bluejays putting runners on base in the fourth, fifth and sixth. The Jays stranded two runners in the fifth and left the bases loaded in the sixth inning.
Baker led off the bottom of the seventh with her record-tying round tripper. She joins Michelle Graner (vs. South Dakota State, March 22, 2007) as the only two Bluejays to hit three home runs in a game.
Kreiser and Michael followed Baker's blast with singles and both were in scoring position following a sacrifice bunt by Martin. Homan drove in Kreiser's pinch-runner Emily Perry with her third hit of the game, to cut the Campbell lead to 7-6. After Grove's ground out to first moved Homan to second base, the Bluejays had the tying run at third and go-ahead run at second base for Jennifer Bohle. Bohle struck out swinging to end the Creighton comeback attempt.
Creighton used four pitchers, who combined to allow only four hits in the loss. The Bluejay staff did issue five walks and the four unearned runs charged to Snygg made her the tough-luck loser, dropping to 0-5 on the season. Changstrom tossed four innings of hitless relief to end the game.
Baker, an Omaha Westside product, finished the doubleheader 5-for-7 with five home runs and eight RBI after she entered the day 8-for-44 (.182) with one home run and five RBI through 18 games. The sophomore slugger now ranks eighth in school history with 21 career home runs.
Homan finished game two 3-for-4 with an RBI, the first three-hit game of her young career.
Creighton concludes its Spring Break trip in Arizona on Saturday, facing Howard in its final game at the Diamond Devil Invitational at 12 pm (CST).
