TEMPE, Ariz. - Becca Changstrom tossed a two-hit shutout and the Bluejay offense notched a dozen base hits in an 8-0 win over Howard (3-11) in Creighton softball's final game at the Diamond Devil Invitational hosted by Arizona State. Amy Baker continued her hot hitting by smashing her sixth home run in two days and Danai Martin went 3-for-3 with three stolen bases to help the Bluejays improve to 9-12 on the season.
The Bluejay offense erupted for six runs in the bottom of the second inning to continue their recent offensive surge. Martin led off the inning with a single and then stole second, her first of three stolen bases in the game. Martin moved to third on a single by Ellen Homan, and scored on an error on Malloree Grove's sacrifice bunt attempt. Jennifer Bohle then dropped down a sacrifice bunt, scoring Homan with the game's second run. Liz McKewon drove in Grove with an RBI single and the Bluejays were up 3-0.
Baker then crushed her sixth home run in the span of 10 plate appearances, scoring McKewon on her team-leading seventh homer of the season to put the Jays ahead 5-0. Freshman Brittnie Kreiser then joined Baker in hitting back-to-back home runs for the second straight day, giving Creighton a six-run inning.
Martin again led off the third inning with a single and again stole second base, eventually scoring on an RBI single from Christa Ruf to put the Jays up 7-0 after three.
Bohle, Ruf and McKewon each singled to start the bottom of the fifth inning and the game-ending run scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Baker.
Baker finished with three RBI in the game, giving her 14 on the season, including 11 in her last three games. Martin finished 3-for-3 with three stolen bases and two runs scored, as she now leads the team with 10 stolen bases already on the season. Ruf, McKewon and Homan each added two hits in the 12-hit game for the Jays.
Changstrom (6-5) struck out four in shutout, her third blanking of the year. Both base hits the right-hander allowed didn't leave the infield.
Creighton returns to Omaha after playing 11 games in Arizona and will take a week off of play before opening Missouri Valley Conference action next weekend at Evansville. The Jays play a three-game set with the Purple Aces starting with a noon doubleheader on Saturday.
