AMES, Iowa - Creighton head coach Brent Vigness became the winningest coach in Creighton athletics history Thursday afternoon as his softball team defeated Iowa State 9-3 for the 565th victory of his Bluejay career. Vigness, now in his 18th season at Creighton, captured the victory just 30 miles from where he grew up in Zearing, Iowa.
The most tenured head coach in Bluejay softball history surpassed Creighton Athletics Hall of Famer Mary Higgins (1977-93) for most victories in program history.
Creighton (12-15) went ahead in the top of the third inning on an RBI single from Christa Ruf. Her single to right field scored Ellen Homan from second base to give the Bluejays an early lead.
Bluejay starter Brittany Telecky worked around lead off singles by the Cyclones in both the second and third innings, stranding two ISU runners in the second and another in the third to keep the home team off the scoreboard.
The Creighton hurler then helped her own cause in the top of the fourth inning, ripping a one out single to left center field in just her second collegiate at bat. She advanced to second on the play as ISU left fielder Kelsey Enslin misplayed the ball. Pinch-runner Blair Lowe replaced Telecky at second base and would score the game's second run on a pinch-hit single off the bat of McKenna Setlik to give the Jays a 2-0 lead.
The Bluejays padded their lead with a five-run fifth inning, taking advantage of a pair of ISU errors. Homan reached on an error by ISU starting pitcher Lauren Kennewell with one out. She moved to second on a fielder's choice and error by the ISU shortstop on a ball hit by Amy Baker. Ruf then walked to load the bases for Emily Perry. The sophomore right fielder, making only her second start of the season, blooped a single in front of the Cyclone center fielder to push across Homan from third.
Telecky then walked with the bases loaded to drive in the Jays' second run of the inning and keep the bases full for Liz McKewon. McKewon, the lone Bluejay senior, dropped down a perfectly placed bunt single to drive in another run. After a fielder's choice was recorded for the second out of the inning, pinch-hitter MaKenzie Michael ripped a single between the legs of ISU reliever Breeanna Holliday to drive in two more runs and cap the Bluejay scoring.
The Cyclones (16-11) responded with their first two runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Enslin led off the inning with a double which glanced off the glove of a diving Ruf in left center field. She would later score on a sacrifice fly. ISU's second run of the game scored on a solo home off the bat of Dalyn Varela.
Erica Miller's lead off home run in the bottom of the sixth inning chased Telecky from the game, as Becca Changstrom entered in relief and got out of the inning with the score still 7-3 in Creighton's favor.
Changstrom helped add to Creighton's lead in the top of the seventh, scoring on a passed ball after getting hit by a pitch to reach. An RBI single by Ashley Frutos, her first hit of the season in just her second start of the year, concluded scoring for the Bluejays in the seventh with the Bluejays ahead 9-3.
Telecky moved to 2-0 on the season with the victory, as she tossed five-plus innings and allowed three runs on six hits. The freshman struck out two and walked one before giving way to Changstrom in the sixth. Changstrom allowed just one hit and faced only one over the minimum in two innings of relief.
Homan, who had two hits in the opener, added two more hits as part of Creighton's 10-hit attack in the win. Nine different Bluejays had hits in the game, including pinch-hit RBI singles from Setlik and Michael.
Kennewell (1-1) took the loss for ISU, she lasted 4.1 innings, allowing five runs, three earned in defeat.
Creighton looks to open its home schedule this weekend when it is slated to play a three-game Missouri Valley Conference series against Bradley. The Jays' home-opening doubleheader against Bradley starts at noon on Saturday.
