TUCSON, Ariz. - The Creighton softball team lost its third consecutive game to a ranked Pac-10 opponent Wednesday night, this time falling 8-0 at fourth-ranked Arizona, following two losses at eighth-ranked Arizona State earlier this week. The Wildcats scored four runs in the first two innings to take control of the game, improving to 20-2 with the win in front of 2,817 fans at Hillenbrand Stadium. Creighton's sixth straight loss dropped the Bluejays to 7-10 on the season.
Lauren Schutzler reached on a one-out bunt single in the bottom of the first inning and scored when Brigette Del Ponte followed with a double to left center field and the Wildcats led 1-0 after three hitters. Bluejay starter Becca Changstrom struck out the next two Wildcats to get out of the inning.
In the second inning, Arizona used three singles, an error and two illegal pitches with runners on base to plate three runs and move ahead 4-0. Changstrom worked out of the inning by striking out the side, giving the rookie five strikeouts through two innings.
Creighton didn't get a hit off of Arizona ace Kenzie Fowler until Sammy Snygg's single with one out in the fifth inning.
Through five innings, Changstrom had nine strikeouts and Fowler, an NFCA First-Team All-American as a freshman last year, had six Ks. Changstrom worked around a bases-loaded one-out jam in the fifth inning to keep the score at 4-0.
The Wildcats exploded for four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, including a two-run home run off of Bluejay reliever Brittany Telecky to end the game due to the eight-run rule.
Fowler improved to 13-1 with the complete game shutout. The sophomore right-hander struck out seven, did not issue a walk and allowed just the fifth-inning single to Snygg.
Changstrom (4-5) pitched well despite suffering the loss. The right-hander struck out nine, her second-highest total of the season. The Lincoln Southwest product was charged with five earned runs, allowed eight hits and walked four in defeat.
Creighton will look to snap its six-game skid when it opens play at the Diamond Devil Invitational hosted by Arizona State on Thursday. The Bluejays play Florida Gulf Coast on Thursday at 3:30 pm (CST) in Tempe, Ariz.
