OMAHA, Neb. - Creighton pounded out 12 hits and freshman pitcher Becca Changstrom struck out a career-high 13 as the Bluejays finally opened their 2011 home schedule with a 7-1 game one victory over Bradley Saturday afternoon. The Jays fell behind 3-0 in the night cap, but a three-run home run from Amy Baker in the third inning and a walk-off home run from Sammy Snygg in the eighth inning delivered a 4-3 win and doubleheader sweep of the Braves in Missouri Valley Conference play at the CU Sports Complex.
The Bluejays (14-15, 4-1 MVC) spotted the Braves (7-26, 0-6 MVC) three runs in the first two innings of game two, allowing a run to score in the first inning. Omaha native KayCee Miller collected her first career home run, a two-run blast in the second in for the Braves, putting the visitors ahead 3-0.
Creighton was hitless until the bottom of the third inning, when Ashley Frutos placed a one out single to right field. Ellen Homan then reached on a fielder's choice, as BU shortstop Alex Chandler threw wildly to second base allowing Frutos to advance to third base. Baker then ripped a 1-0 offering from Lindsay Hufeld over the right field fence on a line, tying the game at 3-3. The blast was Baker's second round-tripper of the day and league-leading 12th of the season.
Game two would remain tied until extra innings, as BU left-fielder Madeline Lynch-Crumrine gunned down the potential game-winning run at the plate in the seventh inning. Baker stepped to the plate in the seventh inning with one out and with Jennifer Bohle at second and Homan at first after each lefty had reached on singles. Baker blooped a single to left field, but Bohle could not beat the throw home from the outfield and Christa Ruf was then retired to end the frame.
The Braves threatened in the top of the eighth inning, working two two-out walks to put the go-ahead run in scoring position, but Changstrom, in her fourth inning of relief, struck out Denise Jilka on three pitches to escape the jam.
That set the stage for Snygg's heroics. The sophomore first baseman, who entered the game as a defensive replacement in the fifth inning, lifted a high towering fly ball down the left field line which just stayed inside the foul pole for her first career home run and just her third collegiate hit. The walk-off homer was Creighton's first walk-off blast since Michelle Graner hit one against Wichita State on May 3, 2009.
Baker finished game two 2-for-3 with three RBI, to cap a 4-for-7 doubleheader with two homers and six RBI. Bohle followed a 3-for-3 game one performance, with a 2-for-3 effort in the night cap to raise her season batting average 61 points in two games.
Brittany Telecky started game two and went four innings, allowing five hits and three runs to go along with three strikeouts in the no decision. Changstrom, who was the winner in game one, picked up another victory in game two, pitching four scoreless innings of relief. Changstrom (10-6) allowed only two hits and struck out four in her second win of the day.
BU's Brittany Fairbairn went 3-for-4 in game two, accounting for three of Bradley's seven hits. Lindsey Hufeld (2-11) took the loss for Bradley, she hurled a complete game, allowing eight hits and three earned runs, striking out seven in defeat.
In the opener, small ball gave way to the long ball as both styles of play led to four runs for the Bluejays in the second inning. Snygg walked to lead off the inning, followed by infield singles from Liz McKewon and Bohle. With the bases full, Frutos ripped the first pitch she saw to center field for an RBI single and the game's first run. A wild pitch from Bradley Starter Mackenzie Camp allowed McKewon to score from the second run of the inning. A line-drive double play off the bat of Homan left one runner on base with two outs for Baker. The sophomore then ripped a line drive over the center field fence to put the Bluejays ahead 4-0.
The Braves scored one run in the top of the third inning, as a leadoff triple from Fairbairn put her in position to score from third base on an infield grounder off the bat of Julie Sherman.
Sophomore Emily Perry, who just entered the starting lineup on Thursday, launched her first career home run in the bottom of the fifth inning, a solo shot to left center field, giving the Bluejays a 5-1 lead.
The Bluejays tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring on an infield hit and a throwing error. Baker then provided the final RBI of the game, knocking a single through the left side of the infield to score Homan from second base.
Changstrom struck out a season-high 13 in the complete game win. She allowed just one run and three hits, while walking one in the opener.
Mackenzie Camp (3-9) suffered the loss for Bradley in the opener, lasting five-plus innings, allowing six earned runs and 10 hits.
Bohle had three infield singles for her 3-for-3 game, while Homan and Perry each went 2-for-3 in game one. Baker finished 2-for-4 with three RBI in the opener.
Creighton and Bradley will conclude the three-game MVC series with a game at noon on Sunday.
