ST. LOUIS - Creighton men's soccer co-captains Ethan Finlay and Brian Holt continue to lead the third-ranked Bluejays, as it was announced Monday by the league office that each player earned his third weekly accolade from the Missouri Valley Conference this season. Finlay was named the MVC Offensive Player of the Week for the second straight week after he played a part of every Bluejay goal scored last week and Holt was tabbed the MVC Defensive Player of the Week following another 180 scoreless minutes in goal.
Finlay assisted Andrew Ribeiro's game-winning goal against No. 22 Kentucky last Wednesday and added a goal less than five minutes later in the 2-0 win. He then scored the lone goal in a 1-0 win over Saint Mary's on Saturday. The senior forward has now scored four goals in his last three matches and his six goals on the year are tied for the MVC-lead, while his 16 points on the season are tops in the Valley. Of his 35 career goals, 17 have been game-winners, and his 35 scores put him just one outside of the top-five in school history.
Holt, who was also tabbed the National Player of the Week by College Soccer News and to the National Team of the Week by Top Drawer Soccer on Monday, broke his own school record last week when he moved his consecutive scoreless minutes streak to over 739 minutes. The senior has not allowed a goal in better than 719 minutes of play this year and his streak of scoreless minutes has now reached 739:47, surpassing his old school record of 722:12 straight shutout minutes set in 2008.
Holt was the final line of defense as the Bluejays shutout the second-ranked offense in the NCAA last week, blanking the high-powered Kentucky attack by making five saves. The Creighton Prep product then stopped six shots, including a pair of clutch saves late in the match to preserve the 1-0 win over Saint Mary's on Saturday. For the season he has made 31 saves on 31 attempts to lead the NCAA with a perfect save percentage, while his unblemished 0.00 goals against average is also tops in the nation. With seven solo shutouts this year, he has pushed his school and league record to 34 career clean sheets and his 44 career victories are now second in school history.
Creighton, the last team in the NCAA to not allow a goal in 2011, is 8-0-0 on the season and off to its best start since 1993. The third-ranked Bluejays play at No. 1 Maryland (8-0-1) on Friday at 6:30 pm (CST).
