TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Carli Tritz sank the game-winning shot with just 2.0 seconds left on the clock to help Creighton post a 64-62 win at Indiana State Friday night. The Bluejays trailed by as many 12 in the second half and were down 60-50 with less than six minutes to play, but closed the game on a 14-2 run capped by Tritz's clutch basket.
Tritz scored 17 of her team-leading 19 points in the second half, as she hit all three of her three-point attempts in the half. The sophomore also led the team with six rebounds and five assists to help the Bluejays (9-8, 3-3 MVC) to their first three-game winning streak of the season.
Indiana State (10-8, 4-2 MVC) equaled its largest lead of the game when Brittany Schoen heaved a step-back 25-foot three-pointer as the shot clock expired with 7:25 left in the game, putting the Sycamores ahead 57-45. From there the Bluejays' press bothered the Sycamores, forcing five ISU turnovers down the stretch as CU made its comeback.
Creighton made 8-of-13 shots from the field including 7-of-8 during a 17-3 run which put the Bluejays ahead 62-60 with 3:08 left. Creighton scored the final 12 points of that run, which included seven points from Tritz, a three-pointer from Ally Jensen and the go-ahead lay-up from Sarah Nelson.
Shannon Thomas, who entered the night averaging a double-double, made her only field goal of the night to tie the game at 62 with 2:08 left after she had missed a pair of free-throws just a minute earlier.
The teams then exchanged a pair of in-and-out three-pointers and after a missed Tritz lay-up with 1:12 to play the Sycamores gave themselves two shots in the final minute to go ahead, but Schoen and Taylor Whitley both missed their attempts. Tritz followed with a missed jumper at 18 seconds, but McKenzie Fujan pulled in the offensive rebound and Creighton called a timeout with 14 seconds on the clock.
Tritz came out of the timeout with the ball and used a high ball screen to curl around and hit a jumper from the top of the key to secure the victory.
Creighton made 10-of-25 three-pointer, including 6-of-16 in the second half to help aide the comeback. CU finished 41.3 percent from the field after shooting 44.1 percent in the second half. The Jays were just 2-for-3 at the free-throw line compared to 20-of-27 by the Sycamores. CU outscored the Sycamores 27-19 in points off of turnovers.
Tritz finished 3-for-3 from long range and led three Jays in double figures. The 19 points marked her 10th straight game in double figures, becoming the first Bluejay sophomore to reach at least 10 points in 10 straight games since Christy Neneman in 2001-02.
Jensen added 11 points, four assists and team-best three steals, finishing 3-of-9 from beyond the arc. Fujan scored 10 points along with four rebounds and three assists.
Deja Mattox led Indiana State with a career-high 25 points. She made 10-of-11 free-throws to lead the ISU attack at the line. Schoen finished with 11 points, making 3-of-7 threes, and Whitley added 10 points and team-leading four steals in her first start since the first game of the season.
The comeback victory was Creighton's eighth in nine wins this year. It marked the second time the Bluejays have overcome a double-digit deficit for a victory this season.
Creighton will look to add to its winning streak and give head coach Jim Flanery his 109th career MVC win on Sunday at Illinois State (9-8, 4-2 MVC). One more Valley win will tie Flan with Connie Yori for most in school history and sixth in league history. The Bluejays and Redbirds tip from Normal, Ill., Sunday at 2:05 pm.
