PINE BLUFF, Ark. - Creighton finished a four-game sweep of Arkansas-Pine Bluff with a doubleheader sweep on Sunday, taking game one 10-2 and the night cap 12-0 on a combined no-hitter between Sammy Snygg and Alexis Cantu. Creighton scored at least 10 runs in each game of the four-game series for its highest scoring four-game span in school history. The Bluejays are 4-0 on the season for the first time since 2007 after outscoring the Lady Lions 54-4 in the season-opening series.
In Sunday's first game, freshman Allie Mathewson led off the first inning just as she had done in her first two career games - with a base hit. The rookie doubled to left field and would score on an RBI single from Alexis Cantu following a walk to Ellen Homan. Junior Amy Baker followed with her fourth double of the weekend to drive in pinch-runner Taylor Flodman with the second run of the game. Sophomore Blair Lowe, making her first career start, later dropped down a squeeze bunt to give Creighton a 3-0 lead after one inning.
The Bluejays tacked on three more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Ashley Frutos was hit by a pitch to start the frame and would later score on an RBI single by Christa Ruf. McKenna Setlik delivered a two-run single before the inning was over to make the score 6-0 in favor of the Jays.
Two more Bluejays runs scored in the fifth, the first on a lead off home run by MaKenzie Michael. Frutos doubled with one out and scored on a two-out RBI triple off the bat of Ruf.
The Lady Lions (0-4) scored two runs off of reliever Kylie Hovinga in the fifth inning to prevent the game from ending after five.
Ruf added another RBI in the seventh inning as a CU two-spot in the seventh made the final score 10-2. Ruf finished the opener 2-for-3 with three RBI. Michael went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored in game one.
Becca Changstrom (2-0) pitched the first four innings of the victory to pick up her second win of the weekend. The sophomore right-hander did not allow a run, struck out eight and walked none in the victory. Brittany Telecky struck out three and did not allow a hit in 2.2 innings of scoreless relief to close out the game.
In the final game of the series, freshman Liz Dike collected an inside-the-park home run to put the Jays on top 1-0 in the second inning. Baker added an RBI single in the third inning and the visitors led 2-0.
A four-run fifth inning opened the game up with as Homan started the inning with a single and crossed the plate on another RBI hit from Baker. Bri Lingl's then collected a two-RBI triple and scored on the play as well to put the Bluejays up 6-0 through five.
After Baker's sacrifice fly in the sixth inning made it 7-0 CU, the Jays pushed five runs across the plate in the seventh to make the final 12-0.
While Creighton's bats were on fire, Bluejay pitching stifled UAPB's offense. Sammy Snygg (1-0) struck out a career-high eight as she faced just two batters over the minimum through five innings. The junior right-hander did not allow a hit or a walk in picking up the victory. Cantu then set down all six batters she faced, including three via strikeout, to log the first combined no-hitter by the Bluejay pitching staff since Feb. 17, 2007.
Baker went 3-for-4 with five RBI to end opening weekend 10-for-15 with 13 RBI in four games. Baker finished the weekend with four doubles after she had just one double in 53 games last year. Dike also went 3-for-4 in the game, with her first career home run, while Lingl and Michael each had two hits in the second game.
Creighton will look for its first 5-0 start since 2007 when it travels to Denton, Texas next weekend to play in the Fairfield Inn & Suites Classic hosted by North Texas.
