LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Louisville improved to a program-record 10-0 with an 8-0 win over the Creighton softball team Friday afternoon at Ulmer Stadium. The 18th-ranked Cardinals scored seven of their eight runs in the fourth inning and ended the game early with a run in the sixth, while handing the Bluejays (7-1) their first loss of the season.
Bluejay hurler Becca Changstrom kept the nationally-ranked Cardinals in check until the Louisville offense erupted in the fourth inning. The sophomore allowed just one hit to the Cardinals through three innings, before Kristin Austin led off the fourth inning with a triple and scored when Katie Keller followed with her first home run of the season. A walk, a single and a wild pitch put the Cardinals ahead 3-0 and Changstrom was lifted without recording an out in the frame.
The Cardinals continued the onslaught against Bluejay reliever Brittany Telecky, adding four more runs on five hits in claiming a 7-0 lead through four innings.
Meanwhile, Louisville ace Tori Collins was stifling, striking out seven straight Bluejays at one point. The senior left-hander carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning, before Ellen Homan ended the no-no bid with a single up the middle. That base knock proved to be all the offense Creighton could muster in the shutout loss.
The game was ended by the run-rule in the sixth inning, when the Cardinals strung together three consecutive two-out hits to push across their eighth run.
Collins improved to 6-0 on the season for the undefeated Cardinals. The lefty struck out 12 and walked one in her second shutout of the season.
Changstrom (3-1) suffered her first defeat of 2012, as she allowed four runs on four hits in three full innings of work.
The Bluejays return to action in Louisville on Saturday, concluding a three-game series against the Cardinals with a doubleheader starting at 11 am (CST).
NOTES: Creighton entered the game averaging 10.3 runs and 11.8 hits per game ... The loss was Creighton's 10th straight to a top-25 team ... Homan and Allie Mathewson were the only two Bluejay starters to not strikeout in the contest ... The loss snaps Creighton's seven-game winning streak to start the year, the second-best start in school history.
