TEMPE, Ariz. - Freshman Allie Mathewson drove in a two-out run in the seventh inning to force extras and fellow rookie Bri Lingl smashed a two-run home run in the eighth to give the Creighton softball team a 3-1 win over Valparaiso before the Bluejays allowed seven unearned runs in a 12-1 loss to East Carolina to conclude play at the Diamond Devil Invitational at Arizona State's Farrington Stadium Saturday.
In the opener, the Crusaders (11-6) scored their only run of the game on a Bluejay error in the bottom of the second inning. After scoring the unearned run, Valpo managed only one hit after the second inning, as Bluejay hurler Becca Changstrom put together her best outing of the season.
Creighton, which stranded two runners in each of the first two innings, was held scoreless until it was down to its final out.
Senior Christa Ruf walked with one out in the top of the seventh inning and moved into scoring position when Ellen Homan grounded out. Mathewson's single up the middle scored Ruf to tie the game.
Changstrom had to work around a hit batter to start the bottom of the seventh inning and left that runner stranded at second base to send the game to extra-innings.
In the eighth, pinch-runner Taylor Flodman was placed at second base using the international tie-break rule and with one out Lingl hit her second home run of the season down the left field line to put the Bluejays up 3-1.
Changstrom retired Valpo in order in the eighth inning to move her record to 4-5. The sophomore hurler allowed only two hits, hit two batters, walked one and struck out nine while not allowing an earned run in eight innings pitched.
Homan and Mathewson each went 2-for-4 for the Bluejays in the win.
In Creighton's final game of the Diamond Devil Invitational, the Bluejays fell behind ECU 1-0 after the first inning and then committed two errors in the third inning which allowed seven unearned runs to cross the plate and the Pirates led 8-0.
Creighton's only run of the loss scored on an RBI single off the bat of Amy Baker in the fourth inning.
Sammy Snygg (3-2) took the loss for Creighton, as the starter lasted 3.2 innings and allowed seven runs. Only two of her seven runs allowed were earned, but she did surrender seven hits, walked two and struck out two in defeat.
The Bluejays managed only two hits in the loss which ended Creighton's Spring Break trip in Tempe, while the Pirates improved to 9-12 on the year by pounding out 11 hits.
Creighton will take a 9-10 overall record into its Missouri Valley Conference opening series at Bradley next weekend.
