TEMPE, Ariz. - Amy Baker hit two home runs and moved past 100 career RBI, but it wasn't enough to help the Creighton softball team defeat Pacific, as the Tigers knocked off the Bluejays 7-6 in CU's second game at the Diamond Devil Invitational at Farrington Stadium on Friday. The Bluejays lost their opener at the tournament hosted by Arizona State on Friday morning, falling 4-1 to New Mexico State.
In the first game of the day, New Mexico State's nine-hole hitter Tehani Kaaihue drove in all four runs for the Aggies in the 4-1 Bluejay loss.
The opener was scoreless until the bottomof the fourth inning, as the Aggies got around a Bluejay rally in the top of the frame. With two out in the top of the fourth, Alexis Cantu drew a walk and her pinch-runner Taylor Flodman reached third on Bri Lingl's double. The two freshmen were left stranded as Aggie starter Karysta Donisthorpe struck out Ashley Frutos to escape the inning.
The Aggies then took that momentum into the fourth inning, getting a pair of one-out singles to set the stage for Kaaihue. Bluejay hurler Becca Changstrom struck out Teresa Conrad to get the second out of the inning, but Kaaihue connected for her first home run of the year to put the Aggies up 3-0.
Allie Mathewson led off the sixth inning with a walk and she would come around to score on an RBI single from Cantu to cut into the Aggie lead.
New Mexico State, an NCAA Tournamnet team last year, answered with a tally in the bottom of the sixth and would win by that 4-1 score to improve to 14-10 on the year.
Changstrom (3-5) took the loss for the Jays, allowing three earned runs on eight hits in six innings. The sophomore struck out five and walked one in defeat.
Donisthorpe (3-1) pitched five innings, striking out eight before getting pulled when she was hit by a line drive off the bat of Ellen Homan in the top of the sixth inning. Alex Newman picked up the save for the Aggies, pitching two scoreless innings after she allowed an inherited runner to score in the sixth.
Homan went 2-for-3 for the Jays, collecting half of CU's hits in the opener.
In the second game of the day, the Bluejays fell behind 1-0 in the top of the second inning, but Blair Lowe's RBI double in the bottom half of the frame tied the score.
Pacific responded with a three-run home run in the top of the third to go ahead 4-1. The Bluejays answered with the same, a three-run shot from junior Amy Baker. Homan and Allie Mathewson started the bottom of the third with back-to-back singles and Baker then blasted her second home run of the year to tie the game 4-4.
The Tigers regained the lead with another three-run outburst in the fourth inning, surging ahead 7-4.
Baker wasn't done, helping the Bluejays climb back within one when she crushed her second home run of the game and team-leading third of the season in the fifth inning. Her two-run home run got the Jays within one, trailing 7-6 heading into the sixth inning.
Homan and Mathewson led off the seventh inning with consecutive singles to put the tying and go-ahead runs on base, but the Jays could not push them across. After Bri Lingl fouled out on a bunt attempt, MaKenzie Michael struck out to bring up Baker with two on and two out in the bottom of the seventh inning. Baker had no heroics left however, grounding out to end the game and dropping the Bluejays under .500 for the first time this year.
Brittany Telecky (0-1) suffered the loss for the Jays, as she allowed three runs and walked three in 1.2 innings of relief for Cantu, who started in the circle. Snygg closed out the game for the Bluejays, tossing 3.1 innings of scoreless relief to keep the Jays in the game.
Baker has now homered more than once in a game six times in her career, with three of those multi-home run games coming in Tempe. The junior first baseman finished game two 2-for-5 with five RBI to move past 100 career RBI. She now has 102 career RBI to become the ninth player in program history to reach 100 RBI.
Homan went 3-for-4 in the night cap to end the day 5-for-7, while Mathewson added two hits in the loss to Pacific.
Creighton is now 8-9 on the season after a 7-0 start. The Bluejays conclude their Spring Break trip in Tempe on Saturday, when they face Valporaiso and East Carolina at the Diamond Devil Invitational.
