BERKELEY, Calif. - Powered by 17 offensive boards and 10 three-pointers, the Creighton women's basketball team defeated Cincinnati 63-52 on Friday, Nov. 28 at the Cal Classic.
With the win the Bluejays moved to 3-2 and advanced the championship game against #14 Cal at 9:30 pm (CT) on Saturday, Nov. 29. Cincinnati, meanwhile, fell to 1-3 on the season and will face San Jose State in the consolation game at 7:00 pm (CT).
Making just two of their first 10 field goals, the Bluejays found themselves down 10-5 with 12 minutes remaining in the first half.
Creighton rallied back to tie the game with a trifecta from senior Alexis Akin-Otiko and an interior jumper by junior Tessa Leytem to make it 10-10 (9:42). Moments later Creighton grabbed its first lead at 16-14, on a running jumper by freshman Jade Owens (6:38).
Following a Bearcat bucket the Bluejays grabbed a 21-16 edge on a trey from junior Marissa Janning and another running teardrop by Owens.
Cincinnati pulled even in the final minute of the first half, but a shrewd play from head coach Jim Flanery found freshman Myah Mellman in the corner for a three-pointer as the horn sounded to send Creighton into half with a 29-26 lead.
The Bluejays opened the second half with four quick points and went on to score ten of the first 12 points to claim a 39-28 lead (15:26). Up 46-36 with just under 13 minutes remaining, the Bluejays put the game away with a 16-2 run over the next six minutes. Sophomore Lauren Works led the final charge with all six of her points.
