
Women's Basketball Falls at #14 Cal, 94-69

BERKELEY, Calif. - The Creighton women's basketball fell to #14 Cal, 94-69, in the Championships game of the Cal Classic on Saturday, Nov. 29.
The loss dropped Creighton to 3-3 on the season, while Cal moved to 6-0 overall.
The Bluejays came out of the gates hot, hitting three of their first five shots, to take a 9-8 lead (16:14). Ultimately, however, the Golden Bears found their rhythm both defensively and offensively in short order. Cal went on to shoot 16-of-29 in the opening period (55.2%) and held the Bluejays to just 10-of-35 from the field (28.6%) as the Golden Bears built a 43-28 lead at the break.
After closing the first 20 minutes on a 6-0 run, Creighton got a layup from senior Alexis Akin-Otiko to open the second half to move within 13 at 43-30. The two squads battled back and forth over the next few minutes as Cal held a 53-38 edge at the first media timeout (15:58). The Golden Bears seized control with a 6-2 run over the next 90 seconds to push their lead to 59-38 and did not look back.
Junior Marissa Janning, sophomore MC McGrory and freshman Sydney Lamberty finished in double figures for the Bluejays with 22, 12 and 11 points respectively.
Cal's Reshanda Gray led four Golden Bears in double figures with 21 points.
Following the game the Cal Classic All-Tournament Team was announced. Cal's Brittany Boyd earned the MVP honor, joined by her teammates Gray and Gabby Green. Creighton was represented by Janning, while San Jose State (Jasmine Smith) and Cincinnati (Ana Owens) both also were represented by one player.
Creighton returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 3 as the Bluejays host Seton Hall at 7 pm in D.J. Sokol Arena in the Big East Conference opener.
