
Despite 22 for Akin-Otiko, Bluejays' WBB Falls to Seton Hall 79-74

OMAHA, Neb. - Despite a career-high 22 points from senior Alexis Akin-Otiko, the Creighton women's basketball team dropped the BIG EAST opener to Seton Hall on Wednesday, Dec. 3.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 3-4 on the season and 0-1 in the BIG EAST, while Seton Hall moved to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
Creighton got off to a strong start as the Bluejays built an early 11-6 lead with 15:28 remaining in the first half. Akin-Otiko and junior Marissa Janning led the early bounce with five and four points respectively.
Seton Hall responded an 11-0 run, fueled by four points and two steals by Daisha Simmons. The Pirates pushed their lead to as much as nine (34-24) with 4:47 remaining, but Creighton used a 9-2 run to get within a possession at 36-33 with 50 seconds remaining until half. Sophomore Brianna Rollerson led the Bluejays late charge with four points. The Pirates, however, seized the momentum with a trey from Janee Johnson to take a 39-33 lead into the half.
Akin-Otiko opened the final 20 minutes of play with her second trey (39-36) and the Bluejays got within a bucket moments later on back-to-back baskets from sophomore MC McGrory and Janning (44-42) with 17:19 left.
Seton Hall pushed its lead back to nine with seven points in just under two minutes. The Pirate went on to lead by as much as 17 (63-46) with 10:42 remaining.
Down 74-58 with 5:04 left, Creighton closed to within four (78-74) with under a minute to play, but the Bluejays were unable to claw all the way back.
Akin-Otiko's 22 points led Creighton, while Janning posted her first career double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Rollerson also finished in double figures with 12 points.
Seton Hall had four players reach 10 points or more, led by a game-high 23 from Daisha Simmons. Ka-Deidre Simmons had 18 points, while Johnson finished with 16 points and Tabatha Richardson-Smith finished with 10.
The Bluejays return to action on Monday, Dec. 8 as Creighton travels to Northern Iowa to face its former MVC rival at 7:00 p.m.
