INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Butler scored seven of the game's final nine points and defeated Creighton for the first time since 1934, 64-61, on Wednesday night at historic Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
Butler (14-6, 4-3 BIG EAST) started the game quickly, as all five starters scored in the first four minutes as the Bulldogs raced to a 10-4 lead. The Bulldogs led throughout the first half, and three times CU had the ball with a chance to tie or go-ahead but would squander the opportunity. Butler closed the first half on a back-breaking 9-2 run, capped by a three-point play with 1.5 seconds left by Roosevelt Jones.
Creighton (9-11, 0-7 BIG EAST) closed to within four points at both 35-31 and 38-34 early in the second half, but Andrew Chrabascz helped the hosts answer the bell each time. His three-pointer with 18:20 left gave BU its first points of the half, and he added a three-point play with 16:18 remaining to push the lead to 43-34.
CU responded with the next seven points, all by its seniors, to draw within two at 43-41. Butler responded. Alex Barlow hit a corner three-pointer after a BU offensive rebound, and after a big blocked shot by Kameron Woods, Jones scored in transition to return the Butler lead to seven at 48-41.
The Jays would hold BU scoreless over the next three minutes to get within three points, but once again a second-chance bucket would doom CU, this time by Jones.
CU rallied on a three-pointer by Devin Brooks to get within two and had three chances to tie or go-ahead but could not convert before Jones made another lay-up to double BU's lead and start a 7-0 run that also included an alley-oop by Woods and give BU a 57-48 lead with 5:26 to play.
Creighton rallied to tie it. James Milliken converted an old-fashioned three-point play with 5:16 left, and Kreklow drained a corner three-pointer to make it a one-score game. Milliken then sank a trey from the same corner as CU tied it at 57-all with 3:18 left, the first tie of the night.
Chrabascz returned the line with 3:01 left, but would miss both foul shots, and Kreklow then missed the front-end with an opportunity to give CU its first lead of the game seconds later. Kreklow would force a steal on BU's next trip down and Milliken converted two free throws with 2:00 left as CU took its first lead at 59-57. Butler got a foul shot from Jones with 1:34 left to draw within one, then took the lead on Chrabascz's lay-up with 53.0 to go.
CU pushed the ball upcourt but Brooks was called for a charge with 46.9 ticks left. Butler would then use most of the shot clock, only to grab an offensive board and get fouled with 11.4 to play. Woods made both to make it a three-point game, and CU countered when Milliken sank two shots with 6.3 left.
Creighton fouled Barlow with 3.1 left, and he sank two shots to move the BU lead to three once again. After CU's final timeout, Will Artino would inbound to Kreklow, but his 45-foot heave bounded off the glass and rim as CU suffered another heartbreaking defeat.
Kreklow led Creighton with 16 points on the evening while adding three steals, while Milliken scored 10 points for CU. Devin Brooks tied a career-best with 10 rebounds and had seven points and six assists. The Bluejays shot 22-for-49 overall (44.9 percent), including 7-of-18 three-pointers (38.9 percent), and finished 10-of-13 at the line (76.9 percent) overall. CU also had 17 assists on 22 baskets but turned the ball over 19 times.
Butler was paced by 18 points, 10 rebounds and six assists by Jones, while Chrabascz (13) and Woods (12) also reached double-figures. The Bulldogs shot 33.8 percent on the night and made 16-of-24 free throws. BU had 17 offensive boards, converting those into 15 second chance points.
Creighton returns to action on Sunday night when it plays at No. 4 Villanova in a 6:01 pm Central tip on FOX Sports 1.
