One night after being inducted into the Creighton Athletics Hall of Fame, five Bluejay greats will be recognized at halftime of the men's basketball exhibition game.
This year's class consists of Ethan Finlay, Ryan Gripp, Marcy (Gans) Parker, Bruce Rasmussen and Jaali Winters.

Scouting #23 Creighton
Creighton returns two starters from last year's team that went 25-11 and won an NCAA Tournament game for the fifth straight season.
After five years patrolling the paint, four-time BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year Ryan Kalkbrenner (19.2 ppg., 8.7 rpg., 2.7 bpg.) is now in the NBA with the Charlotte Hornets. The departure of Kalkbrenner, along with Steven Ashworth (16.4 ppg., 6.8 apg.) and Jamiya Neal (13.0 ppg., 6.1 rpg.), means CU's top three point scorers are gone.
CU's top returning scorer and rebounder from a year ago is sophomore forward Jackson McAndrew (7.8 ppg., 4.4 rpg.), who earned a spot on the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team after setting a Bluejay freshman record with 69 three-pointers.
Other contributors who are back include Jasen Green (4.9 ppg.), Isaac Traudt (4.6 ppg.), Fedor Zugic (4.5 ppg.), Ty Davis (0.9 ppg.), Shane Thomas (0.4 ppg.) and Josh Townley-Thomas (0.4 ppg.).
Nine new players dot the Bluejay roster, headlined by transfers Nick Graves (17.5 ppg. at Charlotte), Blake Harper (19.5 ppg. at Howard), Liam McChesney (6.5 ppg. at Illinois State in 2022-23), Josh Dix (14.4 ppg. at Iowa), Owen Freeman (16.7 ppg. at Iowa) and Austin Swartz (5.9 ppg. at Miami Fla.).
Others to keep an eye on are three players who are new to the collegiate game, guard Hudson Greer, forward Kerem Konan and center Aleksa Dimitrijevic.

Scouting #16 Iowa State
Iowa State lost eight players from last year's team that finished 25-10 and advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. The top two scorers from that squad, Curtis Jones (17.4 ppg.) and Keshon Gilbert (13.4 ppg., 4.1 apg.) are gone.
The Cyclones return three double-digit scorers in Joshua Jefferson (13.0 ppg., 7.4 rpg.), Milan Momcilovic (11.5 ppg.) and Tamin Lipsey (10.6 ppg.), while also adding transfers Dominick Nelson (Utah Valley), Mason Williams (Eastern Washington), Eric Mulder (Purdue Fort Wayne) and Blake Buchanan (Virginia).
Also new are top 100 recruits Jamarion Batemon and Xzavion Mitchell, as well as highly-touted Killyan Toure and Dominykas Pleta.

The Series With Iowa State
Iowa State owns a 17-15 record all-time against Creighton in games that count, though the Bluejays have won 11-of-19 meetings in Omaha.
The teams last met on Dec. 4, 2021, when No. 19 ISU won 64-58 at CHI Health Center Omaha.
Greg McDermott is 1-6 in his career against Iowa State in games that count, going 1-4 as UNI head coach and 0-2 as CU head coach against the Cyclones.
The teams have also played a closed scrimmage each of the previous three seasons, with each of the last two battles being one-possession games.

The Creighton Coaches
Greg McDermott (Northern Iowa, 1988) owns a 350-171 record entering his 16th season with the Bluejays. He owns a career mark of 630-366 entering his 32nd season, and is 499-302 entering his 25th Division I campaign.
McDermott led Creighton to its first BIG EAST regular-season title in 2019-20, taking a Bluejay team that was picked seventh in the league's preseason poll and ending the year ranked seventh nationally. The Cascade, Iowa native has coached Creighton to a share of its first regular-season BIG EAST title in 2019-20 its first Sweet 16 since 1974 in 2020-21 and its first Elite Eight since 1941 in 2022-23.
McDermott has previously been a head coach at Iowa State (2006-10), Northern Iowa (2001-06), North Dakota State (2000-01) and Wayne State (1994-2000).
He is assisted by Alan Huss, Derek Kellogg, Trey Zeigler, Mitch Ballock and Mike Nesbitt.

Recent Exhibition History
Creighton is 56-6 since 1981 in fall exhibition games thanks to 24 straight victories. The only team since 1994 to beat Creighton in an exhibition setting has been Global Sports, which eventually merged and changed their name to EA Sports and had three victories.

McDermott's Exhibition History
Greg McDermott is 32-0 in fall exhibition games as a Division I head coach, including an 10-0 mark at UNI, a 7-0 record at Iowa State, and a 15-0 mark at Creighton. All but two of his triumphs have been by double-digits, as the Bluejays have outscored foes by an average of 92.78 - 61.22 in fall exhibition games.

Preseason Top 25
The Creighton men's basketball team was ranked 23rd in the Associated Press Preseason Top 25 poll, the fourth straight season the Bluejays have been ranked among the nation's best in the preseason.
This year's announcement marks the eighth time in program history the writers have voted CU to the top-25 in the preseason, joining 2006-07 (No. 19), 2012-13 (No. 16) and 2016-17 (No. 22), 2020-21 (No. 11), 2022-23 (No. 9), 2023-24 (No. 8) and 2024-25 (No. 15). All seven of those teams would end up in the NCAA Tournament, with three of the four most recent squads making the Sweet 16.
Creighton's best ranking in program history is seventh, done five times (Jan. 16, 2017, March 10, 2020, March 18, 2020, Jan. 7, 2021 and Nov. 28, 2022).
Including this year's preseason ranking, Creighton has now been ranked 148 times in program history, with 120 of those under the direction of Greg McDermott. Creighton is 180-78 all-time as a ranked team, including a 146-66 mark under McDermott. Creighton has now been ranked at least one week in 12 of McDermott's 16 seasons on The Hilltop after doing it just five different seasons in program history before his 2010 arrival.
Creighton is one of 11 schools ranked in the Top 25 of the Preseason AP poll each of the last four years, joining Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Duke, Gonzaga, Houston, Kansas, Kentucky, North Carolina and Tennessee.
Creighton is one of three BIG EAST Conference schools in the poll, joining No. 4 Connecticut and No. 5 St. John's.

Familiar Faces
Creighton and Iowa State features a pair of programs who are quite familiar with each other, even if they haven't played a ton recently.
Creighton head coach Greg McDermott was the head coach at Iowa State from 2006-10, where he won 59 games in four seasons.
When McDermott was on the Iowa State staff, his staff included current ISU head coach T.J. Otzelberger and current ISU assistant Erik Crawford.
One of Iowa State's other current assistants, Kyle Green, was on McDermott's staff at Northern Iowa.
And yet another ISU assistant, Diante Garrett, played for McDermott during his Cyclone tenure.

First Of Two?
Don't be surprised if both programs hold a few secrets close to the vest on Friday, as Creighton and Iowa State are scheduled to meet in the regular-season on Nov. 25 in Las Vegas as part of the Players Era Men's Championship.
This year's exhibition was set up and announced on May 20th, long before the pairings for the 18-team Players Era Men's Championship event were announced on July 1st.

How Early?
It wasn't that along ago that October 15th signified the first day that practice was allowed and many teams held a Midnight Madness to celebrate the start of the college hoops season. Those days are long gone.
Instead, the Bluejays and Cyclones will throw the ball up on Friday, October 17th, marking CU's earliest public exhibition game on the calendar ever by more than a week. The previous earliest start was October 26th, done prior to the 2017-18 season, as well as last year.

Let's Go On A Run
Creighton has won at least one NCAA Tournament game in 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025. That makes CU one of four teams in the country to have a win in each of the last four NCAA Tournaments, joining Baylor, Gonzaga and Houston.
This is the first time that Creighton Basketball has won an NCAA Tournament game in five straight years. The only other CU program in any sport to win an NCAA Tournament game in five straight seasons is Creighton Volleyball (2015-19).
Even though a certain NCAA bid was wiped away in 2020 by COVID-19, Creighton has still appeared in each of the last five NCAA Tournaments (2021-25).
The only previous time that Creighton has appeared in five straight NCAA Tournaments was from 1999-2003.

Freshman Starts Almost Unheard Of
Since Latrell Wrightsell in 1988, only four true freshmen have started Creighton's first exhibition game. The first was Khyri Thomas in 2015-16, while in 2018-19 Samson Froling got the starting nod. In 2021-22 both Ryan Nembhard and Arthur Kaluma started the first exhibition game.
Since 1992-93, only six true freshmen have started Creighton's regular-season opener.
Ryan Sears did so in 1997-98. The point guard would go on to start all 124 games of his CU career and remains the program's all-time career assist (570) and steals (283) leader.
Doug McDermott did so in 2010-11, and he went on to start all 145 games of his career. He would graduate as the fifth-leading scorer in NCAA history with 3,150 career points and is the only three-time First Team All-American since 1986. He now plays for the Sacramento Kings.
Khyri Thomas got a start in 2015-16 and remained in CU's starting five each of his first 24 games, and 96-of-102 career contests with the Jays. He later spent parts three seasons in the NBA.
Shereef Mitchell joined this elite group in 2019-20 when he got the starting nod against Kennesaw State.
In 2021-22, both Ryan Nembhard and Arthur Kaluma started the opener vs. Arkansas-Pine Bluff, marking the first time Creighton started two true freshmen in a regular-season opener since 1991-92 (Eric Dantzler and Mike Amos). Both men ended up on the BIG EAST's All-Freshman Team, with Nembhard being named Freshman of the Year.
The last time Creighton started three true freshmen in a regular-season opener was 1987-88 (Chris Rodgers, Bob Harstad, Chad Gallagher).

Coaching Consistency Is Key
Between women's basketball coach Jim Flanery (453) and men's basketball coach Greg McDermott (350), Creighton is the nation's only school with a pair of active head coaches with at least 350 victories at their current school.
Flanery (hired in 2002) and McDermott (2010) also make Creighton one of three schools to have the same men's and women's basketball head coaches each of the last 15 seasons, joining Boise State (Leon Rice and Gordy Presnell) and Northern Iowa (Ben Jacobsen and Tanya Warren).

Greg McDermott has 350 victories at Creighton, passing his predecessor Dana Altman (327) for the most in program history in CU's Nov. 13, 2024 win vs. Houston Christian.
McDermott broke a different record on Jan. 21, 2025 at DePaul when he coached his 504th game on the Bluejay sideline, breaking the mark of 503 held by Altman.
