STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Junior Harrison Crawford keyed a seven-run second inning as the Creighton Baseball team defeated Stony Brook on Sunday, March 22.
The win is Creighton's third straight as the Bluejays moved to 11-7, while Stony Brook fell to 7-10 on the year.
The Bluejays got a splendid start from sophomore Daniel Woodrow as he smacked a leadoff triple into center in the top of the first. One out later Creighton worked three straight walks from Crawford as well as junior Brett Murray and Ryan Fitzgerald to take a 1-0 lead.
The pitches seen by offense in the first inning paid dividends in the second. Creighton exploded for six runs on eight hits in the frame. Senior Landon Luckansky opened the frame by lining a double down the left field line. An error on a sacrifice by David Wiedeman allowed Lucansky to score and the flood gates opened. A bunt single by Woodrown put runners out to corner, but Stony Brook cut down Wiedeman at the plate on a double steal. After a walk to sophomore Nicky Lopez, Crawford belted a 3-1 pitch into left center for a two-run triple.
The next batter, Murray, doubled home Crawford to make it 5-1. Consecutive singles from Fitzgerald and senior Kevin Lamb pushed the Bluejay lead to 6-1, while sophomore Kevin Connolly drove home Fitzgerald.
With the first two games of the series cancelled by snow in the northeast, head coach Ed Servais used the big lead as an opportunity to get several pitchers a little work. Eight Creighton pitchers went to the bump. Starter Matt Warren earned the win (2-2) with two innings of scoreless work.
Stony Brook's Tyler Honahan's took the loss (3-2), allowing five runs on four hits and four walks in 1.1 innings.
Four Bluejays posted two hits in the contest (Lucansky, Murray, Wiedeman and Woodrow).
Creighton returns home to begin a five-game home stretch against Air Force on Tuesday, March 24 at 6:30 pm.
