Softball Falls in Doubleheader at Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Creighton softball team fell in both games of a doubleheader at Providence by scores of 5-2 and 6-3 at the Friars' Raymond Field on Saturday afternoon.
Creighton (21-21, 6-12 BIG EAST) fell behind early to Providence (16-22, 8-10) in both games. The Friars kept the Bluejays at bay in both games, never trailing on the day. CU fell out of postseason contention with the pair of losses while PC advances to the BIG EAST Softball Championship with a victory in the series finale on Sunday morning.
Sophomore Jen Daro led the Bluejay offense, going 3-for-6 (.500) at the plate including an RBI double. CU seniors Bri McMahon and Liz Dike each cracked two hits. Dike hit her 12th home run of the season. McMahon also connected on an RBI double as did sophomore Allie Reinhart, one of five other Jays that produced a hit.
In game one, sophomore Sydnee Eck earned the start in the circle for Creighton.
After a scoreless first frame, Providence scored first with a solo home run to open its half of the second inning for a 1-0 lead.
The Friars added three more runs in the bottom of the third. The first five batters got aboard for PC on four hits and a walk to produce three runs before CU retired the Friars, down 4-0.
CU junior Michelle Trulin hit a one-out single in the top of the fourth. Dike then blasted a home run to plate two runs and cut the PC lead in half at 4-2.
Providence responded with a run in the bottom of the frame on an RBI double to yield the final score of 5-2.
Eck dropped to 10-10 on the year with the loss.
CU junior Micaela Whitney started game two in the circle for the Bluejays.
The Friars jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. PC opened with back-to-back doubles to begin the scoring. After a walk and single the Friars later scored on a bases loaded ground out and single.
Creighton evened the score at 3-3 in the top of the fourth. Dike began the rally with single up the middle. A sacrifice bunt from Reinhart scored Dike for the first CU run. Daro followed with an RBI double and McMahon drove in another with a 2-out RBI double to knot the score.
PC responded with three runs of its own in the inning. Two singles and a 2-RBI double drove in the runs for the Friars.
As in game one, the scoring ended after the fourth frame to give the Friars a 6-3 victory.
Whitney dropped to 9-10 on the season with the loss.
Creighton competes in its season finale at Providence on Sunday at 10 a.m. CT.
