Peoria, Ill. - Junior Fabian Herbers tallied two assists as well as a goal to lead the No. 6 Creighton men's soccer team to a 3-0 win over Bradley in the Bluejays' first exhibition contest of 2015.
A fast-paced opening 25 minutes of play saw the Bluejays control the action from the kickoff. The first goal of the game came on Creighton's 13th shot as sophomore Ricky Lopez-Espin came of the bench to blast one in from 18 yards out. Lopez-Espin fielded a pass from Hebers just inside the box, then slammed his left foot through the ball at the 27:18 mark.
Herbers took matters into his own feet moments later, dribbling the ball through the Bradley defense from near midfield along the left flank for an unassisted goal in the 36th minute to push Creighton's edge to 2-0.
The score remained 2-0 at the break, yet the more telling stat of the half was the Bluejays' 20-1 edge in shots taken.
Creighton salted the match away early in the second period when senior Timo Pitter connected from 22 yards out. Just as Lopez-Espin's was earlier, a well-placed pass by Herbers set up Pitter's goal. Pitter fielded the ball approximately 25 yards away and drilled a low shot into the back of the net.
The Bluejays closed the game with an impressive 33 shots, while holding Bradley to just five in the shutout victory. Senior goalkeeper Connor Sparrow needed to make just one save to record the win.
The Bluejays wrap up their exhibition season on Saturday, Aug. 22 as Creighton hosts Northwestern at 7:00 pm in Morrison Stadium.
