Omaha, Neb. - Senior Alyssa Jara and freshman Kaira Houser each connected on their second goal of the season to lift the Creighton women's soccer squad to a 2-0 win over Colorado State on Sunday, Sept. 20.
Creighton moved to 7-3-0 with the win, while Colorado State fell to 3-5-1.
A scoreless opening period saw both the Bluejays and the Rams miss out on golden scoring chances. Junior Lauren Sullivan created Creighton's chance in the 24th minute. Sullivan beat two Colorado State defenders but stumbled slightly as she approached Ram goalkeeper Jesse McGinley from the right side. The stumble was enough to allow McGinley to block Sullivan's attempt and keep the match scoreless.
Colorado State's chance came in the closing minute of the half as Lexi Swanson slipped past the Bluejays back line for a one-on-one chance with Creighton's Erin Scott. Swanson tried to flip the ball over Scott's head but sailed the shot well out of play.
The Bluejays took advantage in the second half with goals in the 70th and 80th minute. Jara struck first as Sullivan tracked down a pass in the left corner from junior Emily Roll. The Kansas City native eluded two defenders to center the ball to Jara directly in front for an easy goal from eight yards out.
Just over ten minutes later Roll set up Houser with a pretty pass down the left side. Houser fielded the ball just inside the goal box and popped it past McGinley. With an open net in front of her Houser eased the ball in for her second goal of the season.
“Anytime you get goals from different forwards, that means you have threats all over the field," said Creighton head coach Ross Paule. "For each of our forwards to get a goal this weekend is huge for us, we're looking for one of them to take a step forward and be the main goal scorer for us.”
Creighton outshot Colorado State 20-6 in the match, holding the Rams to just two shots in the second half.
The Bluejays are back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 22 as Creighton travels to Des Moines, Iowa to battle Drake at 7:00 pm.
