Des Moines, Iowa - Second half goals from junior Lauren Sullivan and Emily Roll powered the offense, while freshman Erin Scott's 11 saves preserved a 3-2 win for the Creighton women's soccer team over Drake on Tuesday, Sept. 22.
The win lifted Creighton to 8-3-0 on the season, while Drake fell to 3-7-0.
The Bluejays scratched the scoreboard first in the 25th minute, converting a set play on a corner. Senior Jill Richgels sent the ball into the box perfectly for freshman Kaira Houser to head in. It was Richgels' 16th career assist, putting her one away from moving into a tie for seventh in Creighton history. Four Bluejays have recorded 17 career helpers.
Drake answered in the 35th minute as Kayla Armstrong redirected a crossing pass from Kylie DeHaven.
The game remained knotted through halftime, but a flurry of action opened the second period.
In the 50th minute the Bulldogs captured a 2-1 lead. Alyssa Brand punched home a pass from Rebecca Rodgers to capitalize on a Bluejay misplay that gave possession to Drake.
Sullivan took exactly 61 seconds to respond, gathering a deflection from the Bulldog defense on the outside of the goal box and firing it past Drake's goalkeeper Brooke Dennis with 50:33 showing on the clock.
"The team showed great character to fight back after losing the lead," said Bluejay head coach Ross Paule. "Full credit to our team to show resilience, fight and grit in tough conditions to get the win."
Scott kept the game at 2-2, collecting a career-high 11 saves, including six in the second half, to set the stage for Roll.
Roll took advantage of her freshman goalkeeper's hard work in the 70th minute, out running the Drake defense down the middle of the field to set up a 1-on-1 opportunity. The Gretna native did not miss her chance, scoring her first goal of the season.
"This was another solid team defensive effort," added Paule. "Scott showed the ability to make some key saves that led to Roll scoring a great game winner."
The Bluejays are back in action on Sunday, Sept. 27 as the Bluejays open BIG EAST play at Marquette at 1:00 pm.
