Omaha, Neb. - Three goals in the opening period helped the Creighton women's soccer team post an easy 4-0 win over Omaha on Friday, Sept. 4. The win lifted the Bluejays to 4-1-0, while Omaha fell to 1-2-1.
The Bluejays got off to a quick start when junior Lauren Sullivan fired a shot from over 30 yards out along the right side the smacked the crossbar. The ball bounced perfectly in front of the goal to sophomore Darby Hugunin. The South Dakota native touched the softly back to the right, deftly avoiding Maverick goalkeeper Haley Shelton to give the Bluejays a 1-0 edge.
Creighton next tally came in the 29th minute as senior Kirstyn Corder drew a foul in the center of the box to set up a penalty shot for junior Ylenia Sachau. She notched her team-leading third goal of the season by firing the ball to the right to make it 2-0.
Late in the opening frame Creighton put the game away as freshman Emma Braasch touched home a corner kick from junior Jill Richgels in the closing seconds of the period.
The Bluejays added a fourth goal early as Sullivan grabbed a pass approximately 40 yards out. She went on to beat two Omaha defenders, then punch in the unassisted goal from 20 yards out.
Freshman goalkeeper Erin Scott posted her third clean sheet at home, collecting four saves. Scott has held opponents scoreless in all 351 minutes she has played in Morrison Stadium.
The Bluejays outshot Omaha 20-8 in the match, while Creighton held an 8-3 edge on corners.
"This is a big game because we have a great event going on [Socctoberfest] and we are playing a local team,' said Creighton head coach Ross Paule. "I am very pleased with posting another clean sheet, this game is always an intense matchup that brings energy and emotion. Our players used the emotion in a good way."
Creighton returns to the pitch on Sunday, Sept. 6 as the Bluejays host South Dakota State at 3:00 pm.
