Omaha, Neb. -- The Creighton Baseball team got two runs in the opening frame and the pitching staff made it stand as Creighton bested UAB, 2-1, on Friday, March 11 in the Bluejays first home game of the 2016 season.
The victory pushed the Bluejays to 7-4 on the season, while UAB fell to 6-7.
Leadoff hitter Daniel Woodrow got Creighton going right away in the bottom of the first, working a nine-pitch walk. Woodrow wasted little time moving up 90 feet as he swiped second on the first pitch to second baseman Ryan Fitzgerald. Junior shortstop Nicky Lopez gave the Bluejays a 1-0 lead with a single to center. With runners at the corners, senior Reagan Fowler worked a five-pitch walk to load the bags. Creighton's second run of the inning came on a double-play ball, allowing Fitzgerald to cross the plate to make it 2-0.
Creighton starter Rollie Lacy settled into a grove after escaping a two men on, one out, jam in the first. Lacy retired eight of nine to quickly move the contest into the top of the fourth. With two down in the frame, the Blazers strung together a double and a single to plate UAB's lone run of the contest.
Lacy went on to claim his third win of the season (3-1), limiting UAB to one run on seven hits over six innings. Seniors John Oltman and Connor Miller closed the game with a combined three innings of flawless ball as Miller earned his first save of the season.
Creighton and UAB continue the three-game series on Saturday, March 12 at 2:00 pm
