Baseball Waits Out Rain to Defeat UAB, 3-1

Omaha, Neb. -- After sitting through a three-hour rain delay, the Creighton Baseball team slipped past UAB 3-1 on Saturday, March 12.
The win boosted the Bluejays to 8-4 on the season, while UAB fell to 6-8 overall.
UAB benefitted from the ability to remain at its hotel until shortly before first pitch as the Blazers bounced out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Brewer Hicklen led off the game with a single up the middle, moved to second on a groundout, then scored on a two-out RBI single from Griffin Gum.
Creighton followed a similar patter to tie the game in the bottom of the second. Senior Matt Gandy drew a one-out walk, moved to second on a grounder, then scampered home on a two-out RBI single by senior Brett Murray.
The score remained 1-1 into the bottom of the fourth. The Bluejays delivered once more with two down, this time with senior Ryan Fitzgerald blasting a two-run double. Junior Kevin Connolly and freshman Michael Emodi got things rolling with consecutive walks, then with two down Fitzgerald blasted an opposite field double into left field. Connolly and Emodi both scored without a throw.
The two-run edge was more than the Creighton pitching staff needed as senior Matt Warren held UAB to four hits and one walk over six innings to earn the win (3-1). Warren gave way to relievers Sam Norman, Nick Highberger and David Gerber limited the Blazers to two hits the rest of the way. Gerber tossed a flawless ninth to earn his third save of the season.
Creighton and UAB wrap up the three-game series on Sunday at 12:00 pm.
