Jays capture third straight victory to improve to 18-10
OMAHA, Neb. -- Micaela Whitney threw a three-hit shutout and Jen Daro hit a two-run homer as Creighton Softball won its third straight game with a 4-0 victory over South Dakota State in game one of a doubleheader on Wednesday.
Creighton improved to 18-10 on the season, while SDSU dropped to 11-21. The Bluejays have won 2-of-3 games against the Jackrabbits this spring, including a split in Florida earlier this month.
After Allie Reinhart roped a one-out double down the left-field line in the bottom of the third inning, Daro lofted a high fly ball that carried over the raised fence in centerfield for her league-leading seventh home run of the season.
Whitney escaped a pair of jams on the day. She stranded a runner on third in the first inning, then avoided damage in the top of the fifth inning after issuing walks to Yanney Ponce and Christian McKone. But a pair of strikeouts against Devan Larsen and Lauren Chirnside preceded a foul out from Ali Herdliska and preserved the Bluejay edge.
CU doubled its lead in the home half of the sixth with a two-out rally. Aujanae McCoy beat out an infield single and Tash Coffiel was hit by a pitch. Kelsey Allender then doubled into the gap in left-center as Creighton's lead grew to 4-0.
Whitney (3-4) would pitch around a two-out single in the seventh to collect her second shutout of the season, and fifth blanking as a Bluejay. Whitney allowed just three hits on the afternoon, striking out five while pitching around five walks.
Allender was 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Daro homered in her only official at bat but also walked twice.
Game two of the doubleheader was scheduled to begin at approximately 4:35 pm, with free live video available at GoCreighton.com/Watch.
