Eck fans 14 in 1-hit shutout of Akron
Kissimmee, Fla. -- Sydnee Eck was almost perfect, recording 14 strikeouts, as she held Akron to just one hit in eight innings to allow the Creighton Softball team to post a 1-0 win over Akron on Sunday, March 6 in the Bluejays' third contest at the Rebel Springs Games.
Creighton moved to 9-8 with the win, while Akron fell to 8-10.
Akron did not threaten throughout the contest as the Zips managed to one runner to second through the opening seven innings.
Once the game moved to the eighth frame, international tiebreaking rules placed a runner at second for each team. Akron opted to sacrifice its runner to third, then tried to score with another bunt. Eck, however, proved equal to the challenge by easily fielding the ball and freezing Akron's Kayla Gillespie at third. Eck went on to induce a pop out to end the frame.
The Bluejay offense best chance to end the game in regulation came in the fourth as Michelle Trulin and Jen Daro delivered back-to-back singles with one out. Creighton, however, was unable to push across the decisive run.
In the eighth Creighton got the big hit it was looking for as Anna O'Gorman laced a two-out RBI single to right to drive home Tash Coffiel.
The Bluejays return to action later today as Creighton will face Holy Cross at 12:30 pm (CT).
