Jays snap no-hitter, shutout, with consecutive bunts in the seventh to win
OMAHA, Neb. -- Mileah McKelvy's bunt in the bottom of the seventh scored pinch-runner Katie Pascuzzi from second base as the Creighton Softball team earned a 1-0 walk-off victory over Iowa State on Wednesday af the CU Sports Complex.
The win was Creighton's sixth straight, improving the Bluejays to 24-12 on the season. Iowa State fell to 15-23 with its eighth straight loss.
"We were facing a pitcher that had good movement and had us swinging and chasing balls up and out of the zone," said 23rd-year head coach Brent Vigness. "Allie (Reinhart) drew a leadoff walk and we then we had two good bunts, well-executed by both. Jen (Daro) to get the ball by the pitcher and then Mileah's (McKelvy) job was to just to get runners in scoring position and she was able to push it by the pitcher and it rolled all the way to the outfield."
Both pitchers were dominant in the first six innings.
ISU's Savannah Sanders retired the first six women she faced and kept the Bluejays hitless through six innings. CU managed just two baserunners in the first six innings, a walk to Blake Ringle to start the third inning and a hit-by-pitch in the fourth to Daro.
While Sanders was dealing, so was Bluejay hurler Micaela Whitney. Whitney allowed just four hits through seven innings, scattering one in the first, second, third and fifth frames, to keep the Cyclones scoreless. She was aided by multiple highlight-worthy plays by the defense behind her, including consecutive diving catches from Michelle Trulin and Kelsey Allender in the second inning, and Aujanae McCoy turning a line-drive double play in the sixth inning.
Creighton finally dented the hit column in the bottom of the seventh inning. Allie Reinhart earned a walk, and was replaced by Pascuzzi. Daro advanced Pascuzzi to second with CU's first hit of the game, a push bunt past Sanders for CU's first hit of the game. McKelvy followed with a near-identical bunt, as it trickled through the drawn in infield and Pascuzzi scored easily when ISU's defense saw second baseman Brittany Gomez rotate to cover first base.
Whitney (7-4) won her seventh straight decision with her league-high fourth shutout of the season. She allowed four hits and four walks while striking out four in her 103 pitch effort.
Sanders (6-10) was the hard-luck loser. She allowed just the two bunt singles in six-plus innings of work, issuing two walks and striking out eight.
"We're getting good pitching from both of our pitchers right now," said Vigness. "We throw a shutout yesterday and get another shutout today, and that's two consecutive days with no errors by the defense. If our pitching and defense continues to do that, even when we're struggling offensively, we're still in the game. It all starts and ends in the circle, and we're getting good outings from our pitchers."
Creighton returns action on Saturday when it opens a three-game series vs. Villanova with a Noon doubleheader at the CU Sports Complex.
