Allie Reinhart homers for the fourth time in eight days for CU
OMAHA, Neb. -- Villanova completed a doubleheader sweep of Creighton Softball, winning the nightcap 8-1 to vault past the Bluejays for second place in the BIG EAST standings.
Villanova (23-13, 8-3 BIG EAST) won its 14th straight game, increasing its best streak since 2001, while picking up its first two road wins of the year on Saturday. Creighton fell to 24-14 (6-3 BIG EAST) while being swept at home in a league doubleheader for the first time in nearly two years (April 18, 2014).
Villanova showed why it owns the league's top offense with a 13-hit game. VU went ahead 1-0 on a home run by Lauren Herschberg in the top of the third inning. One inning later, Nikki Alden hit her third home run of the afternoon, a two-run shot, as the lead grew to 3-0.
Any realistic chances of a Bluejay comeback were thwarted in the top of the sixth inning, when Villanova put together six hits and scored five times to make it 8-0.
Creighton's lone run of the day came in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Allie Reinhart homered for the fourth time in the past seven games to snap the shutout and extend the game. Reinhart finished 2-for-3, adding her team-high seventh double. Anna O'Gorman also had a two-hit game, while Michelle Trulin was 3-for-4 to up her batting average to .312 and her on-base percentage in league-play to an absurd .688.
Villanova had four women generate multiple hits, led by Herschberg's 2-for-4 day with three RBI.
Jordan Prutzer improved to 5-1 with the complete game victory, scattering nine hits while allowing just one run. Sydnee Eck (13-7) was tagged with the loss for CU, allowing 11 hits and eight runs in six innings. Michal Hylton threw a scoreless seventh inning for CU.
The teams conclude a three-game series on Sunday at 11 am. That contest will be broadcast on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
