Jen Daro hits league-leading ninth homer of the season
OMAHA, Neb. -- Villanova completed a three-game sweep of the Creighton Softball team with a 4-2 win over the host Bluejays on Sunday afternoon at the CU Sports Complex.
The win keeps Villanova (24-13) in second in the BIG EAST with a 9-3 league mark, while Creighton drops to 24-15 overall and is 6-4 in the BIG EAST to rank third in the conference.
Kate Poppe took a no-hitter into the sixth inning for 'Nova as her offense built a 4-0 lead. Nikki Alden, who homered three times in Saturday's doubleheader, homered in her first at bat on Sunday to propel the Wildcats to an early 2-0 lead.
Villannova added two insurance runs in the sixth inning as Aleshia Ayers beat out an infield single to score pinch-runner Tianah Hathaway. Ayers later scored on a single up the middle from Sierra McConnell.
Creighton's lone runs came in the seventh inning, when Allie Reinhart singled and later scored on Jen Daro's league-leading ninth home run of the season. The Bluejay offense managed just three hits, with Aujanae McCoy's sixth-inning single the only safety before the final frame.
Micaela Whitney (7-6) suffered the loss, allowing six hits, four runs (three earned) and two walks while striking out five.
Poppe improved to 16-9 with the victory, striking out five while walking just one in her school-record 76th career complete game.
Creighton returns to action on Wednesday when it treks to Vermillion, S.D., to play a 1 pm doubleheader at South Dakota. The game is a make-up of an originally scheduled April 6 doubleheader that was postponed.
