Plymouth Meeting, Pa. -- Staked to a 9-0 lead by his offense, Bluejay starter Rollie Lacy tossed eight strong innings as Creighton defeated Villanova 9-3 in the series opener with the WIldcats on Friday, April 29.
Creighton moved to 28-9 with the win and 6-1 in BIG EAST play, while Villanova fell to 15-26 on the season and 3-7 in conference action.
The Bluejay bats got going in the top of the second, stringing together four two-out hits to seize a 3-0 lead. Senior Brett Murray started the fun with a double to left-center, then junior Kevin Connolly sliced an RBI single through the left side. After Connolly wisely took second on the throw to the plate, freshman Michael Emodi chased him home via a double down the left field line. Back at the top of the order, Daniel Woodrow plated Emodi with a single up the middle.
Creighton took advantage of some Villanova mistakes to add two more in the fifth as Woodrow reach on an error and quickly moved to third on a double by junior Nicky Lopez to left-center. With two men out in the inning, senior Reagan Fowler was hit by a pitch to load the bases, then senior Matt Gandy walked to force in the Bluejays' fourth run of the game. Senior Harrison Crawford followed with an infield single to third to make it 5-0.
A leadoff single by Connolly in the sixth resulted in a manufactured run as he moved to second on a sacrifice from Emodi, took third on a groundout by Woodrow and scored on a passed ball.
The final three Bluejay runs came in the seventh as Murray laced an RBI single to left that was misplayed, allowing a second run to score. Connolly capped the inning with an RBI single up the middle to give Creighton a 9-0 lead.
Villanova scored single runs in each of the final three frames, but it was too little too late for the WIldcats.
Lacy was dominate as he picked up his BIG EAST leading seventh win (7-2) of the season. Rollie held Villanova to two runs on five hits over eight innings. He did not walk a batter, while sitting down five Wildcats on strikes.
Villanova ace Hunter Schryver fell to 5-3 on the season, allowing six runs (four earned) on seven hits and three walks in six innings of work.
Connolly led the Bluejay offense with a 3-for-3 day, scoring twice and collecting two RBI. Murray also had a good showing, finishing 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
The Bluejays and Wildcats will continue their three-game series on Saturday, April 30, with first pitch scheduled for 1:15 pm (CT).
