Omaha, Neb. -- Playing the back end of a day/night doubleheader against a fresh Nebraska squad, the Creighton Baseball team fell to the Huskers 15-2 on Tuesday, May 17. Earlier in the day the Bluejays bested Nebraska-Omaha, 2-1.
The evening loss dropped Creighton to 34-14 on the season, while Nebraska moved to 34-18.
Nebraska took advantage of a limited Creighton pitching staff to score six runs in the first three innings, three in the first and three more in the third.Â
Playing as the visiting team, the two squads alternate the home designation in the third meeting each season, the Bluejays got on the board in the top of the third thanks to junior NIcky Lopez's first career home run. The blast was a laser shot down the left field line with two down in the frame.
Down 6-1, Creighton got a run back in the fifth as junior Kevin Connolly led off the inning with a double to right-center. One out later, junior Daniel Woodrow and Lopez followed with consecutive singles.
Nebraska put the game away in the sixth, plating four runs then added another five in the bottom of the eighth.
Creighton starter Austin Stroschein suffered the loss (0-2), allowing five runs on seven hits in two innings of work. Nebraska's Max Knutson moved to 3-1 on the season, holding the Bluejays to two runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings.
Nebraska's Scott Schriber closed the game 5-for-6 with two home runs and five RBI, while Lopez finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
Creighton returns to action on Thursday as the Bluejays battle St. John's in the first game of a three-game series in New York at 6:00 pm (CT).
