Jays drop regular-season finale, 2-0, to DePaul
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton Softball team closed its 2016 season with a 2-0 loss to DePaul on Sunday in the final contest for six Bluejay seniors.
Megan Leyva (9-10) threw her first shutout of the season to lead DePaul (27-24, 16-3 BIG EAST) to victory.
DePaul, which clinched the BIG EAST regular-season title on Saturday, was hitless through four innings before scoring the only runs it would need in the fifth inning.
Marsha' Pendilton doubled down the right field line on the second pitch of the inning to break up senior Micaela Whitney's no-hit bid. She was bunted to third base before scoring on Gena Lenti's single that got through CU's drawn-in infield. Lenti later came around to score on a bloop double by Dylan Christensen.
Creighton had two solid scoring opportunities against Leyva. The Bluejays placed runners at the corners with one out in the third inning before Leyva induced a popout and groundout. In the seventh inning CU had Kelsey Allender on second and Aujanae McCoy on first before Michelle Trulin grounded out on a full-count pitch to end the game.
Four of Creighton's five hits came by seniors, as Trulin, Blake Ringle, Erin McGonigal and Kelsey Allender each closed their career with a hitting streak. Allie Reinhart had CU's remaining safety, while CU's other senior Katie Pascuzzi also appeared as a pinch-hitter for Ringle to lead off the seventh frame.
Whitney (8-9) was a tough-luck loser in her final outing as a Bluejay, surrendering just four hits and two runs. She walked one and struck out six.
"I really liked the way we came back and played better today," said head coach Brent Vigness, who wrapped up his 23rd year at Creighton. "It was important because as strong as a team as DePaul is, we were not at our best yesterday. We talked about being tested and playing with courage and heart and pride until the last pitch, and I think that's what our team showed today. Certainly we want to thank our six seniors for all they've done and the way they've represented themselves on and off the field. I think we saw some good things the way we finished today, and I liked what we saw from some of our younger kids moving forward."
Creighton finishes its season 25-22 overall, including a 7-11 league mark that is good for fifth place in the BIG EAST Conference.
Tash Coffiel finished with a team-high .353 batting average, while Jen Daro led the team with nine home runs and 39 RBI. Aujanae McCoy paced CU with 16 stolen bases while Trulin scored a team-high 27 times. Sydnee Eck finished the season leading the club with 13 victories and 169 strikeouts in 129.0 innings, while Whitney topped the club with a 2.74 ERA, four shutouts and two saves.
