Crosstown Battle with UNO Highlights Weekend for Women's Soccer
8/24/2016 9:51:00 AM | Women's Soccer
Omaha, Neb. -- The second week of the 2016 season brings a little extra excitement for the Creighton women's soccer squad as the Bluejays battle UNO and Iowa State.
Series History
Creighton leads Nebraska-Omaha, 6-1-0
The Mavericks and Bluejays continue a series that was renewed in 2012 as the two squads face off in Caniglia Field on Friday evening. Creighton has won the last four meetings, but the last time the squads battled on the Nebraska-Omaha campus it came down to the wire.
That contest saw UNO take a 1-0 lead into the 89th minute. The tandem of Lauren Sullivan and Emily Roll connected to not only send the match to overtime, but also supplied the game winner in double overtime.
Last season it was a less exciting contest with the Bluejays taking the contest 4-0. Nebraska-Omaha's lone victory came in 2002 as the Mavericks downed the Bluejays 2-0. Creighton 2-1 on the Nebraska-Omaha campus, taking meetings in 2012 and 2014.
Iowa State leads Creighton, 4-0-1
Creighton and Iowa State meet for the first time since 2012 on Sunday in Morrison Stadium. The Cyclones hold a 4-0-1 edge on Creighton, taking the last two matchups. The last four meetings between the two programs have come in Omaha.
While the Cyclones have a decided advantage in the series, the matchups themselves have been tightly contested. Iowa State claimed a 1-0 victory over Creighton in overtime in 2012, while the Cyclones remaining three wins have all come by one goal.
Bluejays Facing Fresh Legs
While the Bluejays have opened the 2016 season with four matches during each of the first two weekends, Nebraska-Omaha and Iowa State will enter their contests with Creighton having played one less match.
The Mavericks played just one match last weekend, a 2-0 win over UMKC. Iowa State (1-1-0), meanwhile, does not play until Sunday.
Scouting Nebraska-Omaha (1-0-0):
Coming off a 5-11-2 season in 2015, the Mavericks opened with a 2-0 win at home over UMKC last Friday. Nebraska-Omaha returns eight starters from last season, but lost its top two scorers.
The Mavericks, however, brought back goalkeeper Hayley Shelton for her senior campaign. Shelton shined in the victory over the Roos, collecting eight saves for the shutout win.
Nebraska-Omaha was picked to finish seventh in the Summit League preseason poll.
Scouting Iowa State (1-1-0):
The Cyclones split their opening two contests last weekend, falling 5-2 at #7 Florida and besting South Dakota State (1-0) on Sunday.
Iowa State closed the 2015 campaign with a 6-12-0 record, dropping each of its eight contests in the Big 12.
Nine starters return to the pitch this season, led by senior Kotee Willer (who entered the year with 20 career goals).
Despite the strong core returning, the Cyclones were slotted ninth in the Big 12 preseason poll.
Road Openers
Creighton is 12-14-1 in road openers, including 0-1 under Ross Paule. Last season the Bluejays dropped a 2-1 decision at UMKC.
Five Goals
Creighton kicked off 2016 in historic fashion, scoring five goals to best Iowa 5-3. It was just the second time in school history the Bluejays scored five or more goals in the first match of the season, the last time coming in 1998 (a 5-0 win over Huron).
The five goals were the most scored under Paule and the first time the Bluejays have sent that many into the back of the net since a 6-0 win over New Mexico State on
Sept. 5, 2014.
Speaking of the 90s
While the five goals took the WABAC (Wayback) machine to 1998, freshman Callie Hawkins pressed a little deeper.
With two goals in her Creighton debut, Hawkins became the first Bluejay to post a multigoal game out of the gate since Kristina Schoeck did so in 1996. Other Bluejays to tally two goals in their first game (as a freshman) were Kalan Malone (1993) and Allison Dunham (1990).
