Two Second Half Goals Power Women's Soccer Past UNO, 3-1

Omaha, Neb. -- Second half goals from freshman Caeley Lordemann and sophomore Kaira Houser gave the Creighton women's soccer team a 3-1 victory over Nebraska-Omaha on Friday, Aug. 26.
With the win the Bluejays moved to 2-0-1 on the season, while the Mavericks fell to 1-1-0.
Following the pattern set during the opening weekend, the Bluejays appeared to feel out their opponent during the first 10 minutes of play. After sizing up the Mavericks, Creighton took a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute as freshman Hannah Miller glanced a shot off a Maverick defender. Miller collected the ball will a tough angle just outside the penalty area along the right side. Miller blasted a shot toward the net, glancing off the leg of Nebraska-Omaha's Katie Vanderzwaag to give the Bluejays a 1-0 lead.
The score remained 1-0 into halftime as Creighton held a 6-0 edge on shots.
The Mavericks opened the second half with an increased effort, but freshman Taryn Jakubowski turned Nebraska-Omaha away with a team save. One step behind Creighton keeper McKenzie Meola, Jakubowski headed away a shot headed for the back of the net the preserve the Bluejays' 1-0 lead. Moments later the Mavericks broke through when the Bluejays were called for a penalty inside the box. The result was a penalty kick for UNO. Midfielder Carlie Cook seized the chance, beating Meola to the right.
Just under three minutes later the Bluejays regained the lead for good as senior Emily Roll served a ball into the box, setting up Lordemann for the game-winning header. Seconds after the goal Omaha net minder Hayley Shelton lamented what she felt was a missed hand-ball, resulting in a red card.
Creighton put the match away in the 89th minute as Houser collected a rebounded shot and nailed her first goal of the season from the left side.
The Bluejays closed the match with a 15-5 advantage on shots, while Nebraska-Omaha held an 8-5 edge on corners.
Creighton is back in action on Sunday, Aug. 28 as the Bluejays host Iowa State at 1 pm.
