Brookings, S.D. -- Trailing 1-0 after yielding a goal in the first minute of the second half, senior Lauren Sullivan responded with a goal and an assist over the next five minutes to push the Creighton women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over South Dakota State on Sunday, Sept. 4.
The victory moved the Bluejays to 3-1-2 on the season, while South Dakota State fell to 2-3-1.
A physical first half saw Creighton dominate possession with the Bluejays firing off 10 shots, to just one for South Dakota State. Despite the disparity in shots in the first half, the Bluejays were unable to punch in a goal.
After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, the scoring tempo changed drastically in the second half. The Jackrabbits found the back of the net first, scoring just 49 seconds into the second period. Jennie Scislow sent a header into the left post past Bluejay goalkeeper McKenzie Meola. South Dakota State's Annie Williams created the scoring chance as she sent a crossing pass from the top of the right box to Scislow.
Sullivan and the Bluejays needed less than two minutes to respond, converting a penalty into the game-tying goal. Following a Jackrabbit foul, freshman Callie Hawkins threw a pass to start a chain reaction. Freshman Kate Johnson headed the ball towards the box, while fellow freshman Jaylin Bosak headed the ball to Sullivan. The senior wasted no time as she one touched the ball into the left corner to collect her second goal of the season and the 22nd of her career.
Moments later Sullivan served up an assist, blasting a shot off a defender then sliding the ball to the left for freshman Taryn Jakubowski from 15-yards for the game-winning goal.
The Bluejays closed the match with a 16-9 advantage on shots, while South Dakota State created five corners in the second half to finish with a 5-1 edge in that category.
The Bluejays will return to their home pitch on Friday, Sept. 9 as Creighton hosts South Dakota at 5:00 pm. The match will kick-off Creighton annual Socctoberfest celebration, with the men's match against Pennsylvania at 7:30 pm.
