Series History: Creighton leads South Dakota, 9-0-0
Creighton and the Coyotes have battled in each of the past nine seasons, with the Bluejays getting the best of each exchange. Creighton is 5-0 against South Dakota in Omaha, including a 1-0 win over the Coyotes last season.
Scouting South Dakota (1-4-1)
After opening the season with a 1-0 win at home over Idaho, South Dakota has had a tough stretch of five matches. The Coyotes have been shutout in four matches, scoring just once in a 1-1 tie with UC Riverside on Aug. 26.
Part of the issue may have been travel as South Dakota is on the final leg of a six-match road trip to California (UC Riverside and Cal State Northridge), Iowa (Drake and Northern Iowa) and now a two state road trip in Nebraska (Creighton) and Iowa (Iowa State).
The Coyotes biggest issue has been scoring as the Coyotes have just two goals this season. Defensively South Dakota is surrendering 1.56 goals per game, but scoring just 0.31.
Socctoberfest
The 5th Annual Creighton Socctoberfest, a celebration of the Bluejay men's and women's soccer programs, will be held inside Morrison Stadium on the north lawn on Friday starting at 4:00 p.m., in conjunction with the women's soccer match against South Dakota (5:00 p.m., kick-off) and the men's soccer match against Pennsylvania (7:30 p.m., kick-off).
The event is open to all Creighton fans and cost is $25 per person for advance reservations and $30 per person at the door. The event includes a live band, a commemorative 32-ounce Creighton Socctoberfest glass stein, a 32-ounce draw and a meal ticket (bratwurst,
sauerkraut, chips and a German potato salad).
Last Time Out: Sullivan Rallies Her Troops
Coming off a couple of disappointing outings, the Bluejays got back on track last Sunday with a 2-1 victory at South Dakota State. The two teams battled through a scoreless first half, but business picked up early in the second period. The Jackrabbits got on the board first with a goal in the opening minute of the second half, but senior Lauren Sullivan refused to let her Bluejays go down so easily.
Sullivan not only scored the game-tying goal in the 48th minute, she set up freshman Taryn Jakubowski for the game-winner in the 49th minute of play.
Meola Earns BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Freshman goalkeeper McKenzie Meola nabbed the first BIG EAST Weekly Award for the Bluejays this season, earning the Freshman of the Week honor on Monday, Sept. 4.
Making just her second and third appearances in a Creighton uniform, Meola played all 200 of Creighton's 1-0-1 week, making six total saves and posting a .750 save percentage. Meola made four stops against Kansas State in a 1-1 draw on Friday night before denying two shots in a 2-1 victory at South Dakota State on Sunday. McKenzie moved her record on the season to 2-0-1.
Jakubowski Provided A Battle Within
Meola's biggest competition for the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honor may have come from teammate Taryn Jakubowski. The Illinois native delivered an assist in Creighton's 1-1 tie against Kansas State as well as he first goal (the game-winner) at South Dakota State on Sept. 4.
