Bluejays win tightly contested doubles point, pick up three of first four singles matches
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton men's tennis team picked up a 5-2 win over UNO on Friday night at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
The Bluejays improved to 3-3, while the Mavericks dropped to 2-4.
Alex Koca and Mac Mease picked up a 6-4 win at No. 3 doubles to take an early advantage. The No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches each went to a tiebreaker set.
Armando Gandini and Aaron Chalstrom clinched the doubles point for the Jays with a 7-4 win in the tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles. Gandini and Chalstrom battled back from a 5-1 deficit to come back for the 7-6 victory in the set.
"For our No. 2 doubles to come back from being down 5-1 was pretty spectacular – that doesn't happen very often," head coach Tom Lilly said, "It was a big doubles point, because that momentum in a match like this is huge."
UNO sealed a victory at No. 1 doubles as Creighton dropped a 7-4 tiebreaker.
Harrison Lang won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles to expand the overall match lead to 2-0, but the Mavericks and #53 ranked Razvan Grigorescu won in straight-sets at No. 1 singles to close the gap to one.
The Bluejays tallied wins at No. 5 and No. 3 singles to clinch the dual.
Chalstrom won in straight-sets at No. 5 singles (6-4, 6-4), and Koca won in three at No. 3.
Koca dropped his first set 6-2 before rallying to win 7-5 in the second frame and 6-2 in the deciding third.
Jake Glazer also picked up a straight-sets win at No. 6 singles.
UNO ended the night with a three-set victory at No. 4 singles.
"Today was a tremendous win for our guys to win because the effort they put forth to win a lot of big points," Lilly said. "UNO is a great team – Tyson has done an amazing job coaching them – they're having a heck of a year and they've really improved."
