Baseball Records Two One-Run Victories During Doubleheader Against Utah Valley

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton baseball team picked up a pair of one-run victories on Saturday during a doubleheader against Utah Valley. The Bluejays tallied a 3-2 win in the first game before rallying for a come-from-behind 6-5 win in the second at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha.Â
The Bluejays improved to 3-11, while the Wolverines are now 4-14.
Creighton jumped out to a 3-0 lead with single runs during the second, fifth and sixth innings before holding on for a 3-2 victory during the opening game of the day.
The Bluejays recorded only four hits, but manufactured enough runs to record their second victory of the season.
In the second, Riley Landuyt drew an eight-pitch walk and came around to score following a sacrifice bunt from Brennan Hammer and RBI single by Will Robertson.
Jason Allbery led off the home half of the fifth with a walk and came around to score the second Bluejay run. Isaac Collins single through the right side advance Allbery to third before Thomas Luevano hit a sacrifice fly to center.Â
Bryce Only doubled to open the sixth inning before scoring via a wild pitch.Â
Utah Valley cut the gap to one run by scoring one in both the seventh and eighth innings.
In the eighth, David Gerber relieved Grant Spranger and struck out consecutive batters to escape a jam with the tying run at second base and go-ahead run at first with only one out.Â
Gerber closed the door in the top of the ninth inning to tally his second save of the season.
Creighton starter Jeff Albrecht pitched 6.2 innings, striking out six, walking three and allowing one earned run and four hits before giving way to the bullpen after throwing 105 pitches.Â
During game two, Utah Valley jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a home run from lead-off hitter Trevor Peterson.Â
The Wolverines added one more in the first and tallied three in the third frame to take a comfortable 5-0 lead.
Creighton pushed across its first run of the game with a double down the left-field line from Shane Coker.Â
The Bluejays loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth before Collins grounded out to keep the score 5-1 in favor of the visitors.
Both teams posted zeros in the fifth and sixth innings before Creighton tied the game with a four-run seventh inning.
Collins started the inning with a full-count walk before three out of the next four batters recorded hits.Â
Luevano recorded a hustle double on a ball down the left-field line which resulted in Collins scoring from third on a throwing error for the first run of the inning.
After Only singled to deep short, Robertson tripled to straight-away center field to drive in two more run and cut the deficit to 5-4.
Pinch-hitter Parker Upton drove in the final run of the inning to tie the game at six with a fielder's choice to second base.
Creighton's Ryan Tapani held the Wolverines off the scoreboard in the eighth as Michael Emodi threw out a would-be base stealer at second base to send the game to the bottom of the inning.
Clark Brinkman led off the Bluejays' half of the frame with a double to right-center field.
Next, Collins singled on a slow-roller to third base that allowed Brinkman to advance to third.Â
With runners on the corners and one out, Luevano reached first base after being hit by the pitch to load the bases.
Only sent the first pitch he saw into shallow right field. Callahan Moltzan recorded the out and fired the ball home as Brinkman headed to the plate, but the the ball was late, giving Creighton a 6-5 lead.Â
Tapani fired the Bluejays' sixth consecutive scoreless pitching inning in the ninth to give Creighton its second one-run victory of the day.
The junior recorded his first victory of the season with 3.2 innings of one-hit relief. Austin Stroschein, who entered in the third, allowed one earned run and four hits in 3.1 innings pitched as the Creighton bullpen kept the game within reach for the late-inning comeback.Â
