Creighton improved to 6-6 in league play
OMAHA, Neb. --Â The Creighton softball team defeated Seton Hall 4-3 on Saturday to complete a three-game sweep at the Creighton Sports Complex.
The Bluejays moved to 6-6 in BIG EAST play and 15-22 overall, while the Pirates dropped to 5-7 in league play and 19-18-1 overall.
Creighton scored three runs with three consecutive RBI-doubles during the bottom of the first inning to take an early lead.Â
Sam Dellinger's double to right-center field drove in Tash Coffiel. Anna O'Gorman followed Dellinger with a double to left-center before Allie Reinhart doubled over the left fielder's head to drive in pinch-runner Kristin Fry from second to make it 3-0 in favor of the Bluejays.Â
Seton Hall responded in the top of the second frame with a two-RBI single to left field, but the Pirates also left the bases loaded as Bryana Clark induced a fly out to left field to keep the score at 3-2.Â
Ashley Cantu joined the double's party with a two-bagger down the left-field line during the bottom of the second. Two batters later, Dellinger lifted the ball into shallow right field for a run-scoring single to drive in the fourth Creighton run.
The Pirates loaded the bases during the top of the fourth and scored a run because of an illegal pitch to make it 4-3. Creighton reliever Michal Hylton stranded runners at second and third with a strikeout to end the frame.
Hylton allowed three base runners over the final three innings and recorded a perfect final frame to record the victory in relief. The sophomore pitched 3.2 innings and surrendered one hit and one run, while striking out three and walking four.
Creighton had opportunities during the final innings to extend its lead, but the Bluejays left two on base during both the fifth and sixth frames.
Dellinger finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a double, while Cantu went 2-for-3 with a double and run scored, and Reinhart tallied a 2-for-3 performance with a RBI-double.Â
The Bluejays return to action on Tuesday for a nonconference mid-week game. Creighton will travel to Kansas City, Mo. to face UMKC for a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, April 18.Â
