Bluejays defeated the Bulldogs 4-3 and 11-2
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton softball team picked up a pair of victories on Saturday afternoon to sweep the Butler Bulldogs on Senior Day at the Creighton Sports Complex.
The Bluejays defeated the Bulldogs 4-3 during game one before securing a run-rule shortened 11-2 victory in game two.
Creighton improved to 8-6 in BIG EAST play and 18-23 overall, while Butler fell to 17-26 overall and 5-8 in league action.
The Bluejays have now won six consecutive BIG EAST games for the first time in program history. The last time Creighton recorded six consecutive conference victories was during the 2013 season when the team participated in the Missouri Valley Conference.Â
Senior Allie Reinhart drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly to center during the bottom of the 7th to help the Bluejays earn a 4-3 opening-game victory.
With the bases loaded, Reinhart lifted a high fly ball into deep center field for the first out of the inning, but Tash Coffiel scored easily from third base for the game-winning run.
Creighton struck first during the game one with a run in the bottom of the first. After Coffiel reached on an error and advanced to second on a passed ball, the junior third baseman scored without the ball reaching the outfield.Â
With Coffiel at second and Sam Dellinger at first, Reinhart hit a ground ball to the Butler shortstop. The fielder attempted to get the short out at second, but Dellinger beat the throw. On the play, Coffiel never slowed up rounding third and scored ahead of a throw from the second baseman to give the Bluejays a 1-0 lead.
Creighton added to its lead with two runs in the third inning. Senior designated player Anna O'Gorman singled to right field to drive in Coffiel, and Reinhart drove in Dellinger for the third Bluejay run.Â
Butler cut into the lead with a sacrifice bunt in the fourth and tied the game at three with a two-run homer to deep left-center during the sixth.Â
After holding Creighton out of the run column in the bottom of the sixth, the Bulldogs put the go ahead run on base with two outs in the top of the sixth. Jordyn Sturgeon ended the threat by throwing out Butler's leading base stealer trying to swipe second.Â
In the last of the final frame Coffiel was hit by the pitch, Dellinger doubled and O'Gorman was intentionally walked to load the bases. Reinhart fouled off the first pitch she saw and took a pitch out of the zone before lifting the 1-1 delivery into deep center field to drive in Coffiel from third for the winning run.
Reinhart ended the opening game 1-for-3 with three RBIs and Coffiel reached base during all four of her plate appearances without recording a hit, and scored three times. Senior second baseman Aujanae McCoy finished 3-for-3 with three singles.Â
Dellinger's three-run home run helped Creighton run-rule Butler 11-2 during the second game of the day. With runners at first and second and two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Dellinger took the first pitch she saw over the right-field wall for her team-leading seventh home run of the season.Â
The long ball was also her second game-ending home run during the past two weekends. She launched a two-run home run to give Creighton an 8-0 game one victory over Seton Hall on April 14.Â
The Bluejays fell behind 2-0 during game two of Saturday's doubleheader after Butler hit a two-run home run during the third inning before Creighton scored six in the fourth frame and five more in the fifth to end the game.Â
After Creighton starter Michal Hylton recorded a 1-2-3 inning to open the game and tallied a strikeout to leave two runners on in the second, the Bulldogs produced a two-out walk before lifting a home run off the top of the scoreboard beyond the right-field fence to take a two-run lead.
The Bluejays did not score during the third, and Hylton retired Butler in order during the fourth.
In the home half of the fourth frame, O'Gorman hit a solo home run to right-center field to cut the deficit in half. The Bluejays scored an additional five runs with two outs to take the lead. McCoy's infield single allowed the tying and go-ahead runs to score, while Coffiel and O'Gorman each produced RBI singles.
Hylton face the minimum in the top of the fifth before the Bluejays ended the game in the bottom of the frame.
Jayci McGill's pinch-hit single up the middle made it 7-2, Coffiel's single through the right side drove in the eighth Creighton run and Dellinger's first-pitch three-run home run ended the game.
Coffiel finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, O'Gorman went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Ashley Cantu went 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.
Hylton tied a career-high with six strikeouts during five innings of work.Â
Creighton recognized Kelsey Biaggi, Jen Daro, Jessica Lewis, Aujanae McCoy, Anna O'Gorman and Allie Reinhart between the two games on Saturday afternoon as part of Senior Day.Â
