Creighton scored two runs in the bottom of the 7th on a two-run home run
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton softball team scored two runs during the bottom of the seventh, but Nebraska secured a 5-4 victory on a cold, windy and rainy night at the Creighton Sports Complex on Tuesday night.Â
The Bluejays fell to 18-25 overall, while Nebraska improved to 21-25.Â
Trailing 5-2 in the bottom of the seventh, Sam Dellinger hit a one-out double to right field to put one on base for designated player Anna O'Gorman. O'Gorman lifted a 1-0 pitch over the right-center field wall for a two-run homer to make it 5-4 in the last of the final frame.
After Jen Daro walked, Nebraska reliever Cassie McClure recorded her third strikeout of the game to help the visiting Cornhuskers survive the late rally.Â
On a night with temperatures in the 40s and a steady wind-driven light rain, both starting pitchers had trouble settling in.Â
Creighton starter Michal Hylton walked two batters before inducing an inning-ending double play during the first.
Nebraska's Kaylan Jablonski ran into similar trouble by walking the base loaded in the bottom of the opening inning, but managed to escape the inning without allowing a run by recording her third strikeout of the frame.
The Huskers broke into the scoring column with a solo home run to straight-away center field and a RBI bases-loaded walk during the second.Â
Nebraska added two more in the third with a lead-off home run to left and a RBI single to make it 4-0.
Creighton answered with two runs of its own in the bottom half of the third. O'Gorman singled sharply to left field before the outfielder misplayed the ball on a hop, allowing Tash Coffiel to score all the way from first.
Allie Reinhart followed O'Gorman by hitting a hard grounder up the middle for the second consecutive single. Similar to O'Gorman's hit, the Nebraska center fielder misjudged a hop, which caused the ball to roll towards the warning track and allowed O'Gorman to score easily from second to cut the deficit to two runs, 4-2.
Nebraska scored its second run of the game without a hit by drawing an eight-pitch walk to force in a run from third base and make it 5-2 in favor of the visitors during the top of the fourth.
Hylton recorded her fourth strikeout of the night to end the fourth inning and strand three runners on base.
Creighton left one on base in both the fourth and fifth frames before having its best chance to cut into the lead during the sixth.
Jordyn Sturgeon walked and pinch-hitter Jayci McGill singled to left-center to put runners at first and second with one out in the home half of the sixth frame.Â
Aujanae McCoy hit a line shot to the second basemen who could not catch the ball, but did put enough of her glove on it to keep it in the infield and force out Jessica Lewis at second for the second out.Â
Sam Crowley, who came in as a defensive substitution in the fifth inning, grounded out to third to end the sixth and leave two runners on base.
Creighton reliever Bryana Clark fired a one-two-three top of the seventh inning to keep the deficit at three runs heading to the last of the seventh.Â
Clark pitched two innings of relief and did not allow a Nebraska hitter to reach base.
The Huskers recorded a quick out to begin the final half inning before Dellinger doubled and O'Gorman hit her third home run of the season to cut the lead to a single run.Â
Daro's walk put the tying run at first base with two outs and the go-ahead run at the plate, before a strikeout ended the game.
Creighton and Nebraska combined for 18 walks and 17 strikeouts, while the team's combined for 12 hits.Â
O'Gorman finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs from her two-run home run and reached safely for the 15th consecutive game, including eight straight contests with a hit, while Dellinger finished 2-for-4 and extended her hitting streak to 10 games.Â
The Bluejays wrap up their home schedule with a contest on Thursday afternoon against South Dakota. First pitch between Creighton and the Coyotoes is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Creighton Sports Complex.Â
