Omaha, Neb. -- Playing in a steady mist throughout the contest, the Creighton Baseball team saw its 11-game win streak snapped in a 2-1 loss to Xavier on Friday, April 28.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 19-17 on the season and 8-2 in BIG EAST action, while Xavier moved to 25-18 overall and 7-3 in conference play.
The wet conditions played an obvious role on Friday as starters Rollie Lacy (Creighton) and Zac Lowther (Xavier) issued a combined 11 walks (Lacy-6, Lowther-5). The two aces entered the season with a combined 22 free passes (four by Lacy and 18 from Lowther). Despite the control concerns from the wet ball, Lacy worked out of jams to hold the Musketeers scoreless through six innings as he threw a career-high 124 pitches.
The Bluejay offense punched across a run in fourth on a hit batter, a walk, a single and a throwing error. Senior Riley Landuyt was hit by a pitch with one down, then went to second on a walk to freshman Will Robertson. Senior Bryce Only bounced a slow rolling single down the third base line that was thrown base first base. The error allowed Landuyt to score and put runners at second and third with just one down. Creighton, however, was unable to push a second run across in the frame.
The game remained 1-0 until the top of the eighth as Xavier used a single from Chris Givin, a walk to Blaine Griffiths and a wild pitch to put runners at second and third without an out. Bluejay reliever Ethan DeCaster got Nate Soria to pop out to second for the first out, then intentionally walked Will Larue to load the bases. Matt Fallon bounced a slow ground ball to short, then almost resulted in an inning-ending double play. The relay throw, however, was just a split second late as the Musketeers tied the contest at 1-1.
In the top of the ninth Rylan Bannon smashed a 1-0 pitch from Creighton's David Gerber over the wall in left-center to move the Musketeers in front, 2-1.
Gerber would take the loss (2-7), allowing one run on one hit in an inning of relief. Musketeer reliever Matt Kent picked up the win (5-1), limiting the Bluejays to one hit in three innings of relief.
Each team closed the contest with just three hits.
The Bluejays and Musketeers are scheduled to continue their series on Saturday, April 29, but with forecasts calling for rain throughout the day the two sides will assess the conditions in the morning and work to find a time to get the contest in.
