Omaha, Neb. -- In one of the finer efforts of the season, the Creighton Baseball team battled with #14 St. John's into the 14th inning before finally dropping a 3-2 contest on Friday, April 7 in the BIG EAST Conference opener for both squads.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 8-16 on the season and 0-1 in BIG EAST action, while St. John's moved to 22-3 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
Although the Bluejays were unable to push across the winning run, the star of the night was Creighton reliever Ethan DeCaster. Entering Friday the junior's career-high was 2.2 innings pitched. On Friday night, DeCaster not only doubled that mark, he tossed six shutout innings to give Creighton several shots to pull the upset.
Creighton jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as the Bluejays jumped on St. John's starter Sean Mooney with four singles in the frame. Sophomore Clark Brinkman got the Bluejays rolling with a soft single to left, then freshman Isaac Collins lifted a single to center to put men on the corners. After two were gone, senior Riley Landuyt and freshman Will Robertson delivered in the clutch with RBI singles to second and right respectively.
Creighton ace Rollie Lacy cruised through three innings, but three straight two out singles in the fourth allowed St. John's to chip away with one run.
Lacy and the Bluejays held the 2-1 edge into the seventh, when St. John's used a leadoff single, a hit batter and two sacrifices to manufacture the tying run.
Knotted at 2-2 to open the eighth, DeCaster retired 10 consecutive Red Storm hitters. The first St. John's batter to reach off DeCaster came on a one-out single in the 11th by Jesse Berardi. The Red Storm shortstop was quickly sent back to the bench on a 1-6-3 double play. DeCaster cruised through another flawless frame in the 12th and worked out a of bases loaded jam in the 13th, his sixth inning of the contest.
St. John's pushed across what proved to be the game-winning run of senior David Gerber in the 14th, scoring an unearned run courtesy of an error in the outfield.
Gerber was the hard luck loser falling to 1-6 on the season, while St. John's reliever Joe Kelly earned the win (1-0). Kelly did not allow a run in 4.1 innings of work, also a career-high.
Offensively the Bluejays pounded out 12 hits as a team, led by three from Robertson.
The two teams resume their conference series on Saturday, April 8 at 6:30 pm.
