Creighton vs. St. John's Series
Bluejays lead, 7-5
Facing off in their fourth season as BIG EAST foes, the Red Storm and Bluejays have met 12 times,
including four times at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha. Creighton is just 1-3 against St. John's at home,
splitting the regular season series in 2015 and dropping both games in the BIG EAST Tournament that season.
Creighton took three of four from the Red Storm last season, eliminating St. John's in the BIG EAST Tournament to advance to the championship against Xavier.
Scouting St. John's (21-3, 0-0 BIG EAST)
The Red Storm got out of the gate with a flash and haven't slowed down as the Red Storm are 21-3. St. John's had a nine-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday as Columbia bested the Red Storm 7-4
As you'd expect from a team with the success that St. John's has had this season the Red Storm have both hit and pitched very well. As a team the Red Storm enter BIG EAST with a .338 average, led by six players hitting better than .350. Leading the way is senior Gui Gingras at .426, while Jesse Berardi is just behind at .424. Berardi also leads the Red Storm with 28 RBI.
On the bump St. John's enters the weekend with a 2.58 ERA, including a 0.96 mark from Friday night starter Sean Mooney.
BIG EAST Play Brings A Clean Slate
St. John's and Creighton offer opposing examples of how Friday brings a new season for each club.
Entering the weekend with a 21-3 record the Red Storm have high hopes for the 2017 season. To bring those hopes to fruition, however, the Red Storm must avoid complacency against the teams that know St. John's the best.
Creighton, meanwhile, can set aside its 8-15 record and realize a new
opportunity. The opening of conference action begins the chase to the BIG EAST Tournament. The Bluejays want nothing more than to have a chance to reach the NCAA Tournament in their home park this May.
Red Storm and Bluejays Bit by Big Inning in Midweek Losses
Creighton and St. John's can commiserate about one bad frame as when the two teams open BIG EAST play on Friday. Creighton allowed 10 runs to Nebraska in the second inning of its 14-6 loss on Tuesday, while St. John's gave up six in the first inning on Wednesday as the Red Storm fell to
Columbia 7-4.
