South Orange, N.J. -- For the second consecutive game the Creighton Baseball team got a dramatic game-winning home run in the top of the ninth to defeat Seton Hall as freshman Isaac Collins supplied the theatrics in the Bluejays 4-3 win on Saturday, April 6.
With the win in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader, Creighton moved to 21-17 on the season and 10-2 in BIG EAST Play, while Seton Hall dropped to 23-20 overall and 6-8 in conference play.
Creighton jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Collins and sophomore Michael Emodi each smacked one out singles to put runners on the corners. Sophomore Thomas Luevano drove in Collins with a hopper up the middle that was mishandled.
The Bluejays added to their advantage in the fifth as sophomore Clark Brinkman opened the frame with a triple and scored two batters later on an infield single by Emodi.
Creighton pushed its edge to 3-0 in the seventh with a little help from the Pirates. Brinkman reached on an error, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch with one down. After Emodi was walked, Luevano pushed a brilliant safety squeeze towards first to plate Brinkman.
Senior starter Jeff Albrecht did not allow a hit until the sixth, but with one out in the seventh he surrendered a double and a home run to make it 3-2. With one down in the seventh, Creighton head coach Ed Servais went to reliever, senior David Gerber.
Gerber worked around an error to end the seventh, but allowed a run on two hits in the eighth to set the stage for Collins.
Knotted at 3-3, the Bluejays had the top of their order due in the ninth. After Brinkman flied out to left, Collins blasted his first career home run over the right field wall on a 2-2 pitch. Emodi followed with a blast off the wall in left, but the Creighton settled for one in the inning.
After Gerber got the first hitter in the bottom half, a one-out walk sent Servais to the bullpen once more. This time he called upon senior Brennan Hammer, who responded with two consecutive outs to give the Bluejays the series win.
Gerber picked up the win (3-7) with two innings of relief, while Hammer earned his first career save. Seton Hall's Ryan Testani suffered the loss (2-2) allowed one run on two hits in two innings of work.
The series finale started 30 minutes following Creighton's victory in the first game of the doubleheader.
