Born in 1956, Camilo was destined to be a Bluejay. After serving as a student manager for the basketball team at Creighton Preparatory School, he graduated in 1974 and continued to Creighton University where he once again became student manager for the Bluejay Men's Basketball program.
Camilo graduated from Creighton University in 1978 and eventually received two additional degrees from the school. He remained connected to the program and became a scorekeeper for the men's basketball team, even though he had developed significant medical challenges. As part of his MBA program, he was privileged to travel across the globe and meet Mother Teresa. From that experience, he came to appreciate that, regardless of his medical issues, he was, indeed, a fortunate man.
While volunteering as a scorekeeper he would often drive to road games. He made annual trips to St. Louis for "Arch Madness" with friends and family. Although his medical condition continued to deteriorate, he always kept score, and his passion and commitment to the Bluejays never diminished. Camilo was also a season ticket holder for the men's soccer program, women's soccer program and baseball program.
In 2012 he was diagnosed with stage four kidney failure. The dialysis drained him, but he continued to keep score and support the Bluejays. He was fortunate enough to receive a kidney transplant in 2013. A week later he attended two baseball games. Unfortunately, one week after attending the baseball games, he went into cardiac arrest - the transplanted kidney failed and he began the dialysis treatment again..
By the fall of 2015, he was making progress and looking forward to the 2015-16 basketball season and perhaps a trip to New York City for the BIG EAST Basketball Tournament. It was not to be and Camilo passed on October 25, 2015. He was a faithful Bluejay to the very end. The night before he passed, he attended a women's soccer game. His flame burned brightly until the end.
This scholarship is intended to help the students who are invisible to the fans and the public, but who make great sacrifices and contributions of personal time and treasure to support Creighton Athletics.
By contributing to The Camilo Alba Endowed Athletic Scholarship Fund, you are helping Creighton University provide additional scholarship support to Bluejay student managers, while honoring a former Bluejay and friend, Camilo Alba.
