#19 Men's Soccer Clinches BIG EAST Regular-Season Crown With 2-1 Victory At DePaul

Bluejays earned their first regular-season conference title since 2014
CHICAGO – The No. 19 Creighton men's soccer team clinched the 2018 BIG EAST regular-season title with a 2-1 victory against DePaul at Wish Field in Chicago on Saturday afternoon.
The Bluejays improved to 7-0-1 in BIG EAST play (11-3-2 overall) and earned their first regular-season conference title since 2014 and 14th overall. Creighton also clinched the No. 1 seed, home-field advantage and a bye into the semifinal round of the 2018 BIG EAST Championship.
Creighton took the lead during the 33rd minute with a goal from senior Sven Koenig. Koenig sent a shot into the upper right corner of the net for his BIG EAST-leading ninth of the year.
DePaul attempted to answer with a goal of its own, but Paul Kruse made three saves over the course of two minutes to keep the score at 1-0 in favor of the Bluejays.
Kruse made six saves during the first 45 minutes, which matched the freshman's season-high for an entire game. The freshman ended Saturday with seven saves.
Bryce Gibson scored his first career goal in a Creighton uniform during the 62nd minute to push the Bluejays' lead to 2-0. Joel Rydstrand sent a corner kick towards the near post where Gibson headed the ball into the back of the net for the eventual game-winning goal. Rydstrand tallied his team-leading fifth assist on the play.
DePaul cut Creighton's lead in half during the 73rd minute. The Blue Demons directed a header that went over Kruse before DePaul's Jack Richards headed the ball inside the far post.
During the 56th minute, Luke Haakenson had a penalty kick opportunity, but DePaul's Drew Nuelle saved the shot.
The Bluejays ended the match with an 18-14 advantage in shots.
Creighton concludes the regular season on Wednesday night at Morrison Stadium against Georgetown. The Bluejays and Hoyas are scheduled to kickoff at 7 p.m. as Creighton is seeking its first unbeaten conference mark since 2012, the program's final season in the Missouri Valley Conference.
