#14 Men's Soccer Drops Overtime Match Against Georgetown On Senior Night

Creighton took a 1-0 lead during the 25th minute
OMAHA, Neb. -- The No. 14 Creighton men's soccer team fell 2-1 in overtime to Georgetown during the regular-season finale on Wednesday night at Morrison Stadium.
The Bluejays fell to 11-4-2 overall and finished 7-1-1 during BIG EAST play, while the Hoyas improved to 10-4-3 overall and earned a 6-2-1 mark in league play.
Creighton will be the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament after clinching the BIG EAST regular-season title with a victory at DePaul on Saturday, while Georgetown will be the No. 2 seed. Both teams will host semifinal matches on Nov. 7.
The Bluejays recognized their six senior student-athletes -- Mitch LaGro, Joel Rydstrand, Akeem Ward, Sven Koenig, Anthony Macchione and Jack Robinson -- prior to Wednesday's match.
Georgetown's Derek Dodson converted the game-winning goal during the 93rd minute. Kyle Zajec sent in a corner kick from the bench side of the field before the ball skimmed across a few players in the box and fell to the feet of Dodson who slotted the ball into the back of the net.
The Bluejays gained a 1-0 lead during the 25th minute as Koenig scored his BIG-EAST best 10th goal of the year. The senior recovered the ball inside the right side of the 18-yard box after a pass from Younes Boudadi before placing the ball between the near post and Georgetown's Giannis Nikopolidis in goal. Boudadi and Julius Fohr each recorded assists on the play.
The Hoyas' Matt Ledder had an opportunity to tie the match during the closing seconds of the opening half. Ledder outran the Creighton defense and forced Paul Kruse to make a save as time expired to keep Creighton in front, 1-0, at the half.
Georgetown knotted the match at 1-1 during the 65th minute. Peter Schropp placed a free kick from about 20 yards out inside the far post and into the back of the net.
Following the equalizer, Creighton fired three shots on goal but each were saved by Nikopolidis. The Hoyas' goalkeeper made a total of nine saves on Wednesday night.
The Bluejays' final opportunity during regulation time came off the foot of Ziyad Fares during the 83rd minute. Tor Trosten found Fares streaking down the right side of the penalty area before Fares launched a shot towards the near post but the ball was pushed beyond the end line outside of the goal by Nikopolidis.
Georgetown recorded the only shot during overtime with its golden goal less than three minutes into the extra period.
Koenig paced Creighton with seven shots, six on goal, as the Bluejays held a slight 14-13 advantage in shots, including 11-8 on goal.
Kruse made six saves during 93 minutes.
Georgetown became the first team to score multiple goals against Creighton this season.
The BIG EAST regular-season champion Bluejays will continue their season on Nov. 7 at Morrison Stadium for a BIG EAST Championship semifinal match against Marquette or Xavier at 7 p.m. Fourth-seeded Marquette hosts fifth-seeded Xavier on Saturday night at 7 p.m. during a first round match.
