About Wichita State
Scouting Wichita State (5-3)
The Shockers opened the season with four straight wins at home, including an impressive 63-60 overtime contest with Missouri State. Wichita State has played seven of their first eight games at home, dropping a "neutral site" game with South Dakota in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Since the four game winning streak to open the season, however, Wichita State has gone just 1-3, including losses in its last two battles.
Offensively the Shockers are led by Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage with 10.3 ppg and Carla Bremaud at 8.5 ppg. Wichita State has consistently been a long and athletic team that attacks the glass and is strong on the defensive end. The numbers through eight game show no change as Wichita State holds a 2.3 rpg edge on the glass and is allowing just 56 points per game. The key for the Shockers is they've held their opposition to just 32.3 percent from the field this season.
One problem area for Wichita State this season has been turnovers as the Shockers have committed 163 in eight games, better than 20 per contest.
Scouting Creighton (3-4)
Back-to-back wins at home against Nebraska (74-65) and Nebraska-Omaha (66-51) over the last week have the Bluejays feeling much better about the non-conference season. Another positive sign was the return of junior Jaylyn Agnew as the Kansas native scored 13 points in 33 minutes against the Mavericks.
Creighton was able to post consecutive victories despite not shooting tremendously from the field, another encouraging sign. The Bluejays did so by limiting turnovers and going to the glass.
One More Needed for Rivalry Week Sweep
Once the schedule for the 2018-19 season was announced, many Bluejay fans circled Dec. 2-8 as a pivotal week as Creighton faced Nebraska, Nebraska-Omaha and Wichita State in succession. The seven-day stretch became all the more important as the Bluejays started the season 1-4. The rivalry with the Huskers and Mavericks is easy to understand as the three schools are all within a one hour drive. But the rivalry with the Shockers needs little research. Creighton and Wichita State split the Missouri Valley Title during Creighton's final season in the Valley in 2012-13, each going 15-3. Like the Bluejays the Shockers have also left the MVC, yet the rivalry continues
Operation BLUE STATE, Complete
Beat Nebraska: Check
Beat Nebraska-Omaha: Check
Creighton extend their in-state dominance to a third consecutive season with victories over Nebraska and Nebraska-Omaha this season. Creighton's winning streak over the Huskers and Mavericks (UNO) stands at seven straight contests. The last loss to an in-state rival came on Dec. 6, 2015 at Nebraska (65-63).
Wichita native Jaylyn Agnew Looks for Win in Front of Her Home Crowd
Junior Jaylyn Agnew returns home for the second time in her career as Agnew and the Bluejays face off with Wichita State on Saturday. It will actually be the fourth time Jaylyn has been on the Bluejay bench against the Shockers as she redshirted the 2015-16 season.
Agnew was adamant about wanting to return to the floor before facing the Shockers from her hand injury and fortunately her body cooperated. Agnew got back on the floor for 33 minutes against the Mavericks, knocking any rust off as she went 5-of-9 from the field and grabbed nine rebounds.
Prior to the meeting with Wichita State, the Bluejays will gather for dinner at the Agnew home on Friday night.
Bluejays Playing Next Woman Up
During the recent three-game home stand, a variety of differing Bluejays raised their level of play. Versus #24 Drake it was sophomore Temi Carda and freshman Payton Brotzki teaming for 31 combined points, including 20 from Carda. Against the Huskers sophomore Tatum Rembao delivered 18 points, while freshman Rachael Saunders played the entire fourth quarter to preserve the win. Versus Nebraska-Omaha it was freshman Chloe Dworak's turn as the Nebraska native delivered 12 points on a quartet of three-pointers. Joining Dworak was the return of Agnew.
