Creighton claimed a 5-0 win over Prairie View A&M and a 10-0 (5 innings) victory over Grambling State
DENTON, Texas -- The Creighton softball team claimed two shutout victories on Saturday at the Schutt Invitational. The Bluejays defeated Prairie View A&M 5-0 before downing Grambling State 10-0 in five innings.
Creighton improved to 5-2 this season after playing its first two games since Feb. 11.
Senior Bryana Clark recorded the Bluejays' first shutout of the season by allowing six hits during a complete-game effort against the Lady Panthers from Prairie View.Â
Prairie View A&M threatened in the top of the second inning by loading the base with two outs. Clark buckled down and kept the Lady Panthers out of the run column by recording her second strikeout of the afternoon to end the frame.
During the bottom of the second, Creighton scored one run on two hits to take an early lead. Kelli Finan led off the inning with a double, and Jayci McGill drove in the first run of the game with a double of her own two batters later.
Both teams advanced a runner to second base during the third inning but neither team scored.
The Bluejays built a three-run lead after four innings following another RBI double from McGill and a run-scoring single by Tash Coffiel.
Prairie View A&M had its best scoring opportunity during the top of the fifth. The Lady Panthers had runners at second and third with only one out after consecutive hits. Clark continued to keep Prairie View off the scoreboard by inducing back-to-back pop outs to end the frame.
Coffiel drove in her second run of the afternoon and McGill scored on a passed ball as Creighton added two insurance runs during the sixth before claiming the 5-0 victory.
Coffiel ended the afternoon 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs, while McGill finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Lead-off hitter Ashley Cantu went 4-for-4, including a double to start the home half of the first and a single to open the bottom of the third.
Creighton ended the first game of the day with 12 hits.Â
The Bluejays picked up where they left off by scoring three runs in the bottom of the first against Grambling State before claiming a 10-0 victory less than two hours following their first win of the day.
Finan hit her second home run of the season to start the scoring and Nikki McNeil drove in two runs with a double to right-center.Â
Creighton continued to pile on the scoring with a two-RBI double by Mikaela Pechar, a single from Hope Moreno and McNeil's second double of the game as the Bluejays built an 8-0 edge after the two innings.
Kaitlynn Hunt and Cantu each scored on wild pitches during the bottom of the third to push Creighton's advantage to 10-0.Â
The Tigers recorded their only two hits of the game during the first two innings before freshmen pitchers Logan Black and Kiele Miller combined to sit down the final 10 Grambling State hitters of the contest.Â
Cantu, Pechar, McNeil and Victoria Alvarez each had two hits while Creighton totaled 11 during the game. Four different Bluejays also scored twice against Grambling State.
Creighton recorded two shutouts in the same day for the first time since March 9, 2016 when the Bluejays defeated Holy Cross 2-0 and Hampton 7-0 at the Rebel Spring Games.
The Bluejays continue play at the Schutt Invitational on Sunday morning. Creighton will play Prairie View A&M at 9 a.m. before taking on Grambling State about 30 minutes following the conclusion of the first game.Â
